Texas Representative Plans Impeachment Move Against Trump

Representative Al Green, a Democrat from Texas, has revealed his intention to bring forth articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump before the end of the year.

This latest attempt is largely seen as symbolic since the Republicans hold the majority in the House of Representatives. If successful, this would mark Green’s fifth attempt to impeach Trump, tracing back to Trump’s initial term.

While Green hasn’t specified the details of the provisions he plans to include or the actions he will target, he did commit to drafting the resolution before Congress takes its Christmas recess.

“I promise you, articles of impeachment will be introduced before the Christmas holidays,” Green stated. “It’s imperative we engage in our participatory democracy. Impeachment requires our collective involvement.”

He further declared that this motion would be a privileged resolution, compelling lawmakers to vote on it within two legislative days.

“Merely submitting them won’t suffice,” he emphasized. “We will ensure these articles of impeachment are brought to the floor for a vote, and we will see where the chips land.”

“We are vigilant, and we will not allow democracy to falter,” Green added.

Green made these comments during a “remove the system” protest in Washington, D.C., where hundreds of people marched toward the Capitol demanding Trump’s removal.

His first impeachment articles against Trump were introduced in 2017, primarily criticizing the president’s handling of the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville. Green argued that Trump’s inaction exacerbated racial tensions, despite Trump having denounced hatred and violence at the event.

In a more recent incident, in March, Green faced censure from the House of Representatives for interrupting Trump during a presidential address, an act described as a “violation of proper conduct,” which was passed with a 224-198 vote.

Chairman Mike Johnson remarked during the censure, “This is unprecedented; no member of Congress has been removed during a presidential speech before.”

When asked if this impeachment drive might adversely affect Democratic leaders like Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer, Green indicated that past attempts had garnered support from as many as 80 members of his party.

“I am a staunch believer in the Constitution,” Green stated. “Those voting for the impeachment articles are opposed to impeachment.”

“The Constitution doesn’t require consultation with leadership or anyone else,” he added. “A majority is not mandated for impeachment; that’s simply not in there.”

“The Supreme Court’s determination opens the door for impeachment and removal remedies,” he noted.
