Texas requests help from Illinois to catch Democrats

Recently, Texas House Democrats have taken action similar to their counterparts in Illinois by breaking quorum to avoid votes by their Republican colleagues on a district change during special sessions. This situation has led Texas officials to consider legal options, potentially involving the arrest of state lawmakers.

A petition was filed in the 8th Judicial Circuit Court in Adams County, Illinois, which lists Texas House members and other state legislators as respondents. Following the Democrats’ walkout, the state House moved to compel their attendance, supporting a motion aimed at sending warrants to unaccounted absentee lawmakers to ensure their presence when needed.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has warned that if the Democratic lawmakers do not return, he may seek to reclaim eight seats for the GOP.

According to court documents, House Speaker Dustin Burrows stated that a civil warrant was issued for the lawmakers who had intentionally failed to appear. The state is now requesting Illinois assistance, asserting that enforcement of the warrant is a matter of official conduct that should be upheld in Illinois. They seek cooperation from state law enforcement to carry out the civil arrests of the absentees.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is campaigning for a Senate seat against incumbent Republican Senator John Cornyn, referred to the absent Democrats as “rigged legislators.” He emphasized that the state is exploring every legal avenue to ensure these lawmakers are held accountable, insisting that Texas requires representatives who fulfill their duties rather than evade them at the behest of wealthy interests.

In this ongoing situation, Attorney General Burrows mentioned that the state had given the fleeing members ample time to return. Now, the state feels compelled to pursue further legal relief to compel their return from other states, as these lawmakers continue to avoid responsibility to their constituents.
