Texas Senate Candidate Talks U.S. Democracy
James Talarico, a Democratic candidate for the Texas Senate, recently resurfaced an interview from June 2, 2024, where he expressed concerns about the state of democracy in the United States. During his appearance on “The Weekend Show” with Anthony Davis, Talarico emphasized that America is “backsliding” on democratic values and suggested that citizens might find inspiration in Western European countries.
“We haven’t lived up to the promise of democracy,” he remarked, noting that while some nations have made more progress, the U.S. seems to be losing ground in this respect. “That troubles me greatly,” he added, highlighting a belief that there’s still much work ahead in creating a true democracy.
He urged Americans to look to other nations, particularly in Western Europe, for guidance on “continuing this experiment” toward achieving a genuine democracy and a “beloved community.”
The comments resurfaced online this week and caught the attention of figures like Elon Musk, who responded to Talarico’s remarks with a simple, “No.”
In response to questions about his previous statements, Talarico’s campaign defended him, stating that he believes most Texans agree that America is the greatest country and Texas is the best state, and they need to strive for a more perfect union.
Talarico, who has a background as a middle school teacher and a Presbyterian seminarian, gained recognition earlier this year after winning the Democratic nomination for the Senate, defeating Rep. Jasmine Crockett. He’s up against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in the upcoming general election.
Throughout the campaign, Talarico has faced criticism from Republicans regarding his past statements, which have included controversial remarks about Christianity and the American flag. For instance, he previously described the flag as a “complicated symbol,” a statement that drew disapproval from conservative groups. Talarico’s campaign has reiterated that he views the flag as a representation of freedom, opportunity, and hope.
