Texas Sheriff Arrested by Own Deputies
In an unusual turn of events, the sheriff of Johnson County, Adam King, has been arrested by his own deputies. He was booked into his own jail amid allegations of harassing a female employee and retaliating against a whistleblower.
Reports from Fox 4 Dallas indicate that King is facing charges of sexual harassment, retaliation, and perjury, following claims he lied to a grand jury. He entered a not guilty plea during his arrest.
A court date has been set for August 3, 2026, but it might be rescheduled sooner if both parties are prepared. Though King was on leave after his arrest, a judge ruled that he could resume duties under specific conditions. He’s limited to being in the office three days a week, specifically from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Additionally, he has been ordered not to contact seven witnesses involved in the case, most of whom work in the sheriff’s department and include some of his accusers.
Prosecutors stated that King will need to use a private entrance when going to and from his office. He received new charges recently, including felony retaliation and sexual harassment against a witness.
Allegations against King include a pattern of sexual harassment toward multiple women over an 18-month period, brought to light during an investigation by the Texas Rangers.
Specific claims include inappropriate comments regarding female employees’ appearance, weight, and suggestions that they wear makeup at work. Some accusations also involve him offering benefits to married women in exchange for his personal time.
In one instance, a woman recounted a disturbing comment from King regarding her weight loss: he would “do something unpopular” with her. Another woman mentioned an unsettling remark about her wearing white pants in her youth.
During a tea gathering he hosted for female staff, King reportedly made a questionable statement, implying inappropriate behavior by saying he would “put his cream in your tea.”
Harassment reports from two employees reportedly led to retaliation against them, including instances of intimidation. King was arrested in August under the initial charges, later being booked by his own office before posting bond.
Colonel Ben Ariola has stepped in to take over as deputy sheriff during this turbulent time.
