A Texas prom queen, whose life was already marked by uniqueness, tragically lost her life after being hit by a commercial truck while traveling to her new summer job.
Makina Eden Tumlinson, from Tombean, Texas—a small town about an hour north of Dallas—was killed on June 3 on Route 11. The news was confirmed by the state Department of Public Safety.
Her mother, Stephanie Tumlinson, recalled sharing their last moments together right before Makina left in her Chevrolet Cruze.
“We spoke just before she headed out for the day,” her mother said.
After the accident, Makina’s father, Tommy Tumlinson, arrived at the scene where he found his daughter.
“At that point, we were just panicking, hoping it was all a mistake,” said the devastated mother.
The truck driver, identified as Hector Ivan Mejia Garcia, 37, from Allen, Texas, was taken to a local hospital but suffered only minor injuries, according to DPS.
This tragic event felt even more poignant to the family due to Makina’s remarkable beginnings.
“When she was born, doctors gave her a 2% chance of survival, which meant she might not make it at all,” her mother stated. “Yet, she defied all odds.”
The family shared that, despite her brief time on earth, Makina truly lived her 18 years to the fullest—she was a cheerleader, student body president, and crowned prom queen.
“I wish people knew her as the girl who always said yes to a friend and could connect with anyone, no matter their age,” her mother added.
In the wake of her passing, the senior parking space at Tom Bean High School has turned into a memorial adorned with flowers, stuffed animals, and candles.
The family is now grappling with a sense of loss that is unimaginable.
“No parent should have to bury their child… I often wake up from nightmares, wishing she would just walk through the door,” Stephanie Tumlinson expressed.
