Texas woman Ann Walter astonished as missing piece of NASA equipment falls on her property

Ann Walter was taken aback when she spotted a large object drifting in the sky outside her home in rural West Texas.

To her astonishment, what she found in a nearby wheat field was not just any item—it was a box-like scientific instrument resembling an SUV, attached to a massive parachute and adorned with NASA stickers.

She promptly contacted the local sheriff’s office and discovered that NASA was, in fact, searching for the missing gear.

“It’s wild because when you’re on the ground and see something up there, you have no idea how big it really is,” she said. “That parachute? At least 30 feet across. Just huge.”

Walter recalled receiving a call from NASA shortly after. The Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility launches large, unmanned research balloons soaring over 20 miles into the atmosphere for scientific studies.

Nobody at NASA responded to inquiries on Thursday, likely due to the ongoing government shutdown.

A message regarding the balloon component also went unanswered.

The balloon facility’s launch schedule indicates a series of launches that took place in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, around 140 miles from where the equipment ended up.

Hale County Sheriff David Cochran confirmed that NASA representatives contacted his office last week about the lost apparatus.

Walter eventually connected with officials from the balloon facility, who informed her that the balloon had been launched from Fort Sumner just the day prior and was equipped with a telescope to collect data on stars, galaxies, and black holes.

“They came out with a truck and trailer to get it,” she mentioned.

Interestingly, Walter and her family, who reside in Edmonson, Texas, didn’t take any photos or videos of the unusual event.

“It feels surreal that this happened to us; being a part of it was something special,” she reflected. “Really a great experience.”
