Texas Woman Shot Over Door Courtesy Incident

A woman in Texas lost her life in a PetSmart parking lot after a dispute concerning a simple act of courtesy—specifically, a lack of gratitude for holding the door open.

Cecilia Simpson, 41, was shot multiple times outside a PetSmart in Dallas around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, as reported by the Dallas police.

Witnesses recounted that Simpson had held the door open for Kiona Zachua Hampton, 22, at a nearby Five Below store. Tensions flared when Simpson allegedly became upset that Hampton hadn’t thanked her, leading to an argument. Afterward, Simpson and her daughter left for the PetSmart situated nearby.

Once inside PetSmart, Simpson informed an employee that she believed Hampton was following her.

Hampton then entered the store and confronted Simpson’s daughter, prompting further arguments.

Though Hampton initially left, she reentered shortly and started arguing with Simpson again.

At this point, after being asked to leave, Hampton allegedly threw a bottle at Simpson’s car, where Simpson and her daughter were seated.

This led to a physical confrontation, during which Hampton reportedly drew a handgun and fired three shots at Simpson.

Hampton was apprehended later that night during a traffic stop and admitted to having argued with Simpson but maintained she only brandished the gun when things escalated physically.

She is currently in jail under suspicion of murder, though her bail has not yet been determined.

An emergency room nurse who witnessed the incident shared her account, stating, “The perpetrator was saying, ‘Go outside. Let’s deal with it outside. Let’s fight outside.’ The mother and daughter were trying to leave.” According to her, the mother and daughter aimed to de-escalate, but the altercation got out of hand when Hampton drew her weapon.

The nurse also mentioned that she performed CPR until paramedics arrived. “My daughter was next to her mother the whole time, and that’s just heartbreaking,” she recalled. “It’s never easy when a child cries for their parent, and that moment lingers.” She added, “My mom was a crucial part of my life, and that loss is incredibly tough.”
