The Texas Longhorns have been talked about as a second-day pick, but it was only his record-breaking 40-yard run on Saturday night that raised his draft stock.

Worthy was widely considered the fastest receiver in this class, so there was a lot of attention in advance. And he proved it.

His first attempt was an amazing 4.25. On his second attempt, he tied Ross’ record with an unofficial score of 4.22.

However, when officials reviewed the run, his time was reduced by one-hundredth of a second, making the official time 4.21 seconds, a new 40-yard dash record.

Some of the NFL’s biggest stars agreed, including notable speeder Tyreek Hill.

In his third and final season at Texas, Worthy had career highs with 75 receptions for 1,014 yards. He had 197 catches for 2,755 yards and 26 touchdowns in his career.

Worthy’s drawbacks are his small size (he weighs only 160 pounds) and fall issues, but his speed to break up matches could outweigh those negatives.

His Longhorns won the Big 12 and qualified for the College Football Playoff, but lost in the Sugar Bowl to Ross’ alma mater, Washington. The Huskies ultimately lost to Michigan, which was Worthy’s first appearance.

This is Worthy’s second time being named to the Big 12 first team last season. He was named to the first team in 2021 and the second team in 2022.

Ross had a record-breaking performance and was selected with the ninth pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. He beat former running back Chris Johnson, one of six players to rush for 2,000 yards in a season, by two-hundredths of a second.
