TGL’s novelty fun is great for now, but that won’t last forever

As far as entertainment is concerned, the game of golf is currently in a very unstable situation.

Let me be clear: I love golf. I love playing golf, I love watching golf, and I love golf content in general.

However, the game of golf has made it difficult to be a fan of golf and to watch golf.

I just want to say this to say that last week's introduction of TGL was very exciting for someone like me. TGL is effectively and essentially simulator golf, with some of the biggest names in the game lining up to participate, grabbing a microphone and having fun (even golfers).

Tuesday night offered the latest version of TGL, with Los Angeles Golf Club (my team of choice, no big deal) completely destroying the Jupiter Link. It still seems silly to write something like this, but the league is new and you have to accept some things.

As an avid golf fan, I watched every inch of the game and enjoyed it, but I'd be lying if I said the sports fan in me wasn't watching Florida get upset by Mizzou at the same time. . SEC basketball is a thing, and expecting TGL to become appointment TV soon is an ambitious endeavor, but one of the reasons I was watching the Gators and Tigers was that the action on TGL was stale. It was said that it was becoming more and more.

It's clear that a huge amount of money, timing, and effort went into making TGL a success. I wouldn't bet on that happening in the long run. Obviously I'm rooting for it.

But even after only two weeks, we now know as firmly as we didn't know before that a two-hour outing can't just be pro golfers making fun of each other. we know we can't see anything great golf A shot considering this is a simulator league…and that's fine! Cool! Nor does the conversation between gamers need to be engaging. But something, anything, has to be the hook for this new league, otherwise it will be doomed to the same fate that befell all the performances the match.

I'm not going to pretend like I know what the exact answer is, but I will tell you that I go out of my way to consume tons of golf content on TV, social media, YouTube… And so on. Even I need something to keep my full attention on Tuesday night SEC basketball games.

The initial shock, awe, fun, and “this is cool” feeling is gradually fading.

We need more.
