As businesses slowly begin to back away from the annual tradition of shouting gay pride from the rooftops to promote their products, many musicians, comedians and businesses alike are finding the threat of being canceled by online mobs is diminishing.
That celebrities like Katt Williams and J.K. Rowling survived cancellation attempts proved that a temporary wave of online criticism is actually a weatherable storm, inspiring other comedians to steadier course when attacked by angry people.
Perhaps this is never more true than in the case of stand-up comedian Ty Rivera. A self-described “bridge burner” who has dealt with backlash on multiple occasions, Rivera told The Blaze News that he feels confident speaking out about taboo topics because he’s a master of his craft.
This attitude often puts Rivera at odds with the LGBT activist community, which tends to assume that he is aligned with them on all issues.
One example is Rivera’s recent statement about Target’s new decision to remove Pride clothing from certain stores, a year after the department store came under fire for “tuck-friendly” swimsuits targeted at transgender people and other Pride merchandise aimed at children.
“What always happens with LGBT is that marketing people get too excited at some point and start trying to do things that no one really wants, even within the community,” Rivera explained.
“When it comes to marketing to kids, nobody is asking for that. And especially with Pride itself, there’s this big conversation now about ‘Pride is great for kids,’ but when did that happen?”
“Kids have always been at Pride because lesbians make mistakes,” Rivera joked. “But it’s never been forced,” he continued. Similarly, Rivera said Target went too far when it started selling “children’s books about gender ideology” and advertising “tucked swimsuits.”
“That’s the way these people are. If you tell them the truth, they get angry.”
“The marketing was wrong, and we had been marketing for years. [didn’t market] We started selling it to kids, and then all of a sudden we were marketing to kids, and now we’re here.”
Rivera reminded the audience that Target exists to make money and said he doesn’t trust companies that actually share his beliefs, and the same goes for people who identify as LGBT.
“Gay people, people of different ethnicities… you’re stupid if you think corporations and businesses are actually going to support your existence. What really matters is making money, you’re marketable, you’re making a profit.”
If the product doesn’t sell, or worse, if people turn around and walk out, “why keep it in front of the store?” Rivera questioned.
The target recently Pride Month 2024 PlanThis included reducing the number of stores selling gay-themed merchandise.
However, the company did not back down from its ideological support, saying, “At Target, we know that business thrives by creating experiences that foster a sense of belonging, which is why we support and celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community during Pride Month and throughout the year.”
Target also said it would participate in the Minneapolis Pride Parade and support organizations including the Human Rights Campaign. support Child sex reassignment surgery.
“I don’t think transgender female athletes belong in women’s sports, not just because of their physicality, but because there are things that women can’t do.”
NFL Dissidents
The NFL’s support for Pride activities has been a widely discussed topic in early June 2024, with all but nine teams (and a growing number) making outwardly public posts or web pages in support of a particular sexuality.
Asked why it’s taken the NFL so long to acknowledge that its efforts are unpopular among fans, especially in comparison to the national anthem protests, Rivera said, “Because a lot of gay people don’t have a life.”
“If they think you don’t support them, they’ll just start harassing you,” he laughed. “I’ve been the target of LGBT ‘cancellation’ before, so I know how this works.”
Rivera described a scenario in which a “small number of really struggling gay people” each created 10 different email accounts and sent messages to specific businesses to create the impression of strong opposition and resentment.
“Sometimes it’s a lazy approach, like copy and paste,” he revealed.
“I think the same thing is happening with sports teams. But this push is kind of ridiculous, because there are gay people who really love sports, and there are trans people who love sports, but at the end of the day, I don’t think we’re the market they should be specifically targeting.”
“I don’t think a lot of people expect that from them,” he added.

Cancelled
“The first time I got canceled by the trans community, I don’t remember what I said, but I know I said the truth,” Rivera said with a grin. “That’s just how these people are. They get mad when you tell them the truth, but they don’t realize that I have trans friends my whole life.”
With that in mind, Rivera said he plans to talk to transgender people, talk about them, belittle them and make jokes about them just like any other person, rather than treating them as if they’re “made of glass.”
The comedian is determined and unafraid to offend people by speaking her truth. One example of this was when Rivera was scrolling through her social media feeds and was intrigued by an article about LGBT Pride.
“I was feeling so proud that morning that I decided to click on the article.”
Rivera reflected on reading the “most stupid article” he had ever read about LGBT Pride, and shared his thoughts about it on Facebook. His comments on the “stupid” article inevitably angered a few readers. Rivera said that someone who was dating a transgender person tried to start an argument with him, but the comedian was unfazed by the anger and reminded the person that “he only became my boyfriend 9 months ago.”
After being told multiple times that she didn’t respect Transgender Day of Remembrance and found it offensive, Rivera remembers explicitly saying the day “doesn’t exist.”
“It’s like Kwanzaa, who cares?”
“I told them,” Rivera continued, “you’re arguing with a real faggot now, so it’s not going to be the same situation as if you were arguing with a straight person.”
Professional athletes, professional women
Rivera said she understands why some women’s sports organizations act like “ambulance chasers” trying to sound the alarm about instances of men interfering with women’s space.
“Unfortunately, I think it’s necessary,” he acknowledged.
Rivera said she feels groups like the Independent Council for Women’s Sport are fighting for a cause and that women should have their own spaces, including sports and locker rooms. She said she is “100 percent” on the side of women who are “adamantly saying, ‘This is for us.'”
“Transgender female athletes are not only given physical reasons, but what else can women not be given?… I don’t know if many people in the country have ever seen a transgender woman naked, but it’s shocking!” he laughed.
Rivera said transgender athletes have denied many women opportunities when it comes to scholarships and athletic achievement, and while she thinks the idea of women having their own sports is “common sense,” she said organizations like ICONS are absolutely necessary.
Rivera also cited the necessary backlash from figures like Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling.
“She has enough money to say she doesn’t care anymore.”
Rowling doesn’t hesitate to directly refer to transgender women as men, literally. Police Scotland To arrest her for violating hate speech laws.
“I am currently overseas, but if what I have written here breaches the provisions of the new law, I look forward to being arrested when I return to the birthplace of the Scottish Enlightenment,” Rowling said. March 2024.
Rivera reiterated her belief that college-age women should be able to express their discomfort with men in locker rooms without being called out for it.
He ended by pointing out the unsettling reality that a person’s life can greatly influence how loudly they speak about their beliefs.
He said many people who object to men encroaching on women’s territory “have to keep quiet because they don’t want to lose their jobs.”
