Thailand firework factory explosion leaves around 20 dead, no survivors found

In Thailand, an explosion at a fireworks factory north of Bangkok on Wednesday killed around 20 people, police said, with authorities touring the scene but no survivors had been found.

The cause of the incident was not immediately clear, police said, but it happened mid-afternoon in Suphanburi province, about 119.56 miles north of Bangkok.

“We do not know if all the workers have died. Officials are at the scene to investigate. No survivors have been found,” Governor Nattapat Suwanpratip told Reuters.

According to police, a preliminary investigation puts the death toll at 20, with many injured.

Prime Minister Suretta Tabisin was briefed on the explosion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and called for a swift investigation.

“The Prime Minister has ordered an inspection of the factory to ascertain whether it was operating legally and whether the explosion was caused by negligence. The law is in place as innocent deaths and injuries have occurred. It must be enforced to the fullest extent possible,” said Suletta’s office.
