The 14 years that broke Britain, part 2 – podcast | News

In the second of a two-part series examining the legacy of 14 years of Conservative government in the UK, Jonathan Friedland and Helen Pidd It details the chaos that ensued after Prime Minister David Cameron left Downing Street.

Cameron’s rule came to an abrupt end in the summer of 2016 when his gamble on a referendum backfired and Britain voted to leave the EU. He retired to a shepherd’s hut in his garden to write his memoirs, and a period of turmoil began.

The king of chaos has been Boris Johnson, who barely had time to celebrate his landslide victory before a global pandemic forced him to lock down the country in the winter of 2019. He imposed tough restrictions on the public but didn’t follow the rules himself. Liz Truss became prime minister only to be overtaken by iceberg lettuce.

And now, with just days to go until voting day, Rishi Sunak’s campaign is being overshadowed by allegations that Conservative party insiders are betting on the day.
