2026 MTV Video Music Awards Recap

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards offered some truly strange moments, leaving viewers a bit bewildered.

Despite featuring a lineup of big names and attempts to create memorable moments in music, the show somehow lacked energy and excitement. Snoop Dogg, in a rather laid-back hosting role, along with a mix of lackluster performances and odd comments, prompted one big question: Why is it so hard to get this right?

Snoop Dogg’s comment about Madonna, “She ain’t a virgin no more,” captured the awkwardness of the night.

The event, held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, got off to a rough start, running nearly half an hour late due to a previous NFL game. Fans were already frustrated when raw footage leaked online before the show began.

Those who stuck around were met with a chaotic show marked by clunky speeches and awkward acts, and, noticeably, a host who seemed to vanish into the background.

Madonna kicked things off as the first performer, sharing the stage with Sabrina Carpenter, Charlie XCX, and others. Initially, she appeared energetic, but it wasn’t long before she seemed unsteady on her feet.

She was nominated for 13 awards and managed to win 7, but watching her accept those awards was, well, a bit uncomfortable.

Her acceptance speeches included some awkward moments, confusion about which award she had won, and struggles to complete her thoughts. She even leaned on her fellow performers for support during her speeches.

“First of all, I would like to thank my fingers, because I can always count on them,” she declared while receiving the Artist of the Year award, followed by a peculiar joke about pulling a laser light from her backside. At one point, she forgot which award she was accepting after winning Best Dance, losing her train of thought multiple times throughout the night.

During her time with Sabrina Carpenter, Madonna made an offhand remark about Carpenter not replying to her messages, leaving Carpenter looking quite taken aback.

Sombr’s tribute to George Michael should have resonated, but ended up feeling lackluster, marked by a sluggish performance that didn’t do justice to the iconic musician’s legacy.

Though Snoop Dogg was the host, his presence felt minimal. Beyond a few scripted jokes at the beginning, he faded into the background, leaving most of the spotlight on the performers and presenters.

While there were brief moments of joy throughout the evening, they were overshadowed by an overall feeling of disarray in what should have been a more cohesive show.
