Rama Duwaj, Wife of NYC Mayor-Elect, Draws Parallels to Hunter Biden

Rama Duwaj, soon to be the First Lady of New York City alongside her husband, mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani, is being compared to Hunter Biden for her increasing public presence and politically infused art, according to artist John McNaughton.

McNaughton noted that the art world is likely to be buzzing about Duwaj’s intentions and message. For months, she has been posting mostly monochromatic sketches online, creating a buzz similar to Biden’s controversial artistic career.

“In art, personal identity significantly affects marketability,” McNaughton stated, reflecting on Hunter Biden’s rise in notoriety tied to his political affiliations.

The Context of Duwaj’s Work

Mamdani, a democratic socialist, was set to officially take office on November 4. On the day of voting, Duwaj shared a thoughtful Instagram post relating her recent viewing experiences and her artistic inspirations.

“What I saw in October motivated me to create art,” she expressed, detailing 14 artworks she found impactful. McNaughton remarked on her unique position, saying, “It’s rare to see an elected official’s partner engage in such a public way.” He added that Duwaj’s art aligns with the values of those who supported Mamdani, suggesting it echoes a student’s creative exploration.

In recent years, Hunter Biden transitioned into the art scene, selling some pieces for astonishing sums, reportedly reaching as high as $500,000. He claimed that painting offers him a way to channel his energy positively and steer clear of unfavorable influences.

Controversies and Artistic Expression

While generally maintaining a low profile during the campaign, Duwaj sparked discussions after reposting a tribute to a Palestinian influencer who celebrated a controversial attack, raising eyebrows in various media outlets.

She also illustrated her sentiments about another activist detained by ICE, sharing stories that reflect her political beliefs and artistic voice. McNaughton observed that although her messages resonate with certain viewers, they are unlikely to sway others, as they appear to be deeply personal expressions.

Political Art and Its Implications

Duwaj and Mamdani’s relationship began on a dating app in 2022, culminating in a civil marriage in New York City in early 2025, followed by a traditional celebration in Uganda. McNaughton asserted that political art, viewed by some as mere propaganda, has historically provided a platform for artists to express significant political narratives.

“Art can consolidate movements,” McNaughton noted, highlighting that the gallery scene often favors stories aligned with prevailing political trends, enhancing visibility and sales opportunities.

In closing, McNaughton remarked introspectively on the nature of art, suggesting it is often dismissed as propaganda based on its associations. There is potential for further dialogue on this as public interest surrounding Duwaj continues to grow.
