The assassination attempt on Butler marked a significant change for Trump.

When President Trump addressed his supporters in Iowa recently, the sounds of fireworks for a moment reminded him of a past event. “It’s just fireworks. I hope. The last famous word,” he commented, recalling a tense moment in Pennsylvania a year ago when a gunshot had shattered the atmosphere.

“You really have to stay positive,” he reiterated in Iowa, admitting, “I didn’t like the sound either.”

Sunday marked the anniversary of an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, which proved to be a crucial moment for both Trump’s political journey and personal life. The incident has led to ongoing evaluations within the Secret Service regarding security protocols.

This near-death experience intensified Trump’s connection with his supporters who’ve rallied around him in the months leading up to the 2024 election. It also prompted the campaign to reconsider security measures.

For many of his followers, this event has added to Trump’s larger-than-life image. They’ve often suggested that divine intervention played a role in saving him, as chants like “fight, fight, fight” echoed from the crowd in Butler. A haunting image of a bloodied Trump pumping his fist, flanked by Secret Service agents, has become emblematic of his resilience.

“Butler was pivotal,” Susie Wills from the White House mentioned on a podcast, emphasizing the significance of that day and how tragic it was for Americans to witness such a fighter in action.

Typically, the White House doesn’t commemorate anniversaries in grand style. However, Trump plans to sit down for an interview with his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, and spend the weekend at his estate in Bedminster, New Jersey. On the actual anniversary, he’s set to attend a FIFA World Club Cup soccer match at MetLife Stadium before heading back to the White House.

It seems that staff are prioritizing remembrance of Corey Comperatore, a rally attendee who lost his life trying to protect others that day. “A year ago, we lost Corey, an American hero who sacrificed his life,” a spokesperson said. “President Trump will always remember Corey and his family. On that day, fate intervened in Trump’s life,” they noted, adding that a year later, Trump is “standing stronger than ever” in his fight for Americans.

Some Trump officials believe that it was a unique set of circumstances that allowed him to survive. Minutes after the rally, Trump needed to reference some charts addressing rising border crossings under the current administration, leading to a fortunate angle that shielded him from the bullet’s full force.

“It won’t happen again. I believe God wanted him to live,” Wills expressed.

The president has alluded to divine guidance during his discussions about the events of the past year, and the imagery surrounding the shooting has come to symbolize his campaign’s narrative, highlighting his status as a target of political attacks.

The Butler rally not only shifted the political tides for the 2024 race, reinforcing Trump’s grip on the Republican base, but it also momentarily halted Democratic attacks, particularly following then-President Biden’s struggling debate performance that led him to step back from the race shortly after.

Wills noted that security has since been a leading concern, with adjustments made to Trump’s campaign strategy, including limiting outdoor rallies and evaluating venue safety carefully.

The fallout from the security oversight has been swift, with Kimberly Cittle resigning as Secret Service director just days after the incident, and Congress began scrutinizing how everything unfolded during the rally.

A year later, the repercussions are still felt, as the Secret Service has suspended six agents connected to the events in Butler.

“My thoughts are with Corey Comperatore, who sacrificed himself that day,” stated Sean Curran, the new Secret Service director appointed by Trump. “Since taking on this role, I’ve focused on ensuring that we learn from July 13th and implement necessary changes to avoid future incidents,” he added, reinforcing the agency’s commitment to safety and security.
