Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, claims former President Donald Trump rudely refused to pay for Army Specialist Vanessa Guillen's funeral after initially offering to pay for it. Stick to the latest articles. Multiple people connected to this article went on record denying the allegations against Mr. Trump.
Guillen was killed in 2020 by a soldier he was working with. Guillen's death made national headlines after her family sprung into action after the military investigation into her initial disappearance was so badly mishandled.
Goldberg claims that Trump became furious when he found out about the funeral costs in December 2020.
“It doesn't cost $60,000 to bury a Mexican!'' he turned to his chief of staff, Mark Meadows, and ordered, “Don't pay!'' Later that day, he was still upset. “Can you believe it?” he said, according to witnesses. “You’re trying to fuck people up and scam me.”
Mr. Goldberg's story was met with a flurry of denials, most importantly from Mr. Meadows. Mr. Guillen's family and attorney also said the story was inconsistent with his experience with Mr. Trump.
“Please treat this dishonest work accordingly.”
In an interview with CNN on Tuesday, Goldberg was asked what he thought about the denial.
“I don't give any weight to those things at all. My sister wasn't at the meeting. The family lawyer wasn't at the meeting. Mark Meadows was at the meeting. Kash. Patel was also present at the meeting. There were many people present.''Other senior officials were also present at the meeting, and there are notes written at the time by participants in the meeting, which I have written here. It describes exactly what was said in the story,” Goldberg said.
Goldberg cited the scarcity of sources for 2020's “underdogs and losers” as an example of why it has credibility this time.
“So it's not surprising that Mark Meadows would deny it, but that denial doesn't carry any weight. I have the sources at the time and the notes from that meeting at the time. [Trump] he said. It also tracks everything we know about the way he speaks,” he claimed.
Patel similarly denied the allegations about Trump.
Meadows spokesman Ben Williamson showed how The Atlantic twisted the denials to appear less reliable.
“I… sent a comment that President Trump said, ‘I never said that,’ and referred to the alleged comments they printed about Ms. Guillen. “Treat this dishonest work accordingly,” he said. showing A screenshot of the statement he sent.
