Liberty’s Rebounding Duo Shines Ahead of Match Against Sky
When Brianna Stewart and Jonquel Jones are on their game, it’s tough for other teams to keep up with the Liberty.
Both players are among the top 10 rebounders in the WNBA as they prepare for a home game against the Sky. Their focus on grabbing boards is a consistent topic of discussion between them.
“JJ and I talked about this. Every game, we should be aiming for a double-double,” Stewart mentioned after a recent overtime victory over the Wings. “Rebounding takes effort, no doubt. I’m thrilled we controlled the boards and got some second-chance points.”
Their conversation seemed to pay off, as the Liberty secured 17 offensive rebounds during their narrow 99-98 win, with Stewart, Jones, and Marin Fortu all making history. The trio accomplished the rare feat of achieving point-rebound double-doubles in the same game, a milestone only seen ten times in the league’s history.
This match marked Stewart’s first game with 10 or more rebounds since June 21. Her assertiveness on the court, coupled with Jones’s support, became crucial for breaking a four-game losing streak.
“It was a real discussion,” Jones reflected on the need for double-doubles. “I always aim for that, but mostly I want to assist her and contribute to our team’s success.”
Stewart’s performance, highlighted by 33 points and eight assists, definitely lifted the team’s spirits as they prepare to face a Sky squad that has been struggling.
“That’s just Stewie,” Jones added. “Her ability to keep playing at such a high level is what makes her an exceptional player.”
