The best places to live for a higher chance of winning the Powerball

Powerball Winning States Revealed

A recent study has identified which US states are more likely to win Powerball. Interestingly, none of the tri-state areas made it into the top five.

Powerball, available in 45 states, offers various ways to win, whether by matching just the Powerball number or correctly identifying all six numbers for the jackpot, all for a small investment.

According to research by csdb.gg, data spanning from 1992 to 2025 revealed the locations that yield the most wins per 100,000 residents for prizes like Match 5, Match 5 + Powerplay, or Powerball Jackpot.

New Jersey and New York landed at 31 and 32 on the list, with respective wins of 2.45 and 2.14 per 100,000 locals. It’s a bit disappointing, honestly.

Contrastingly, Rhode Island stands out with an impressive 38.39 wins per 100,000 residents, having aimed for 427 victories over the past 33 years. Lucky little Rhode Island, right?

West Virginia follows closely behind at second place, boasting 27.29 wins per 100,000 residents and over 483 total Powerball victories—definitely an appealing aspect for those living there.

Delaware comes in third, while New Hampshire reports around 21.15 wins per 100,000 residents, with a historical total of 285 wins.

Indiana is the last state in this top five, with approximately 18.41 wins per 100,000 residents. Not too shabby, I guess.

On the flip side, some states seem to be struggling in the lottery department. California has seen 357 Powerball wins overall, but the chances there are only 0.91 wins per 100,000 people. Texas, while having 275 wins, falls behind with 0.88 wins per 100,000 residents.

Then there’s Wyoming with 0.85 wins, followed by Washington sitting at just 0.78 wins per 100,000 people.

And at the very bottom? Mississippi. They joined Powerball in early 2020, and in the five years since, they’ve only recorded two wins, with an estimated win ratio of about 0.07 per 100,000 residents. Ouch.

The disparity in Powerball victories is striking. Smaller northeastern states tend to outperform larger ones when it comes to wins per capita. It’s fascinating, really.

However, this doesn’t mean throwing money at lottery tickets is a guaranteed win. It highlights how ticket-buying habits vary so much across different regions and how an individual’s winning chances may depend significantly on when they start playing Powerball.
