Remember when movies were the perfect escape from everyday worries?
Today, a filmmaker's first job is to rub it in his face.
“It's 2024,” Pakistani-Canadian journalist Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy boasted about being selected to direct the next Star Wars movie. Far, far away,” she said.
It seems unlikely that Obaid-Chinoy's vision for this iconic series goes beyond her narrow ideological concerns. “I like making men uncomfortable,” she says Said.
This is the latest reminder that Hollywood's priority in producing woke remakes like this isn't to wow fans or even make a profit.politics teeth product. Shared cultural symbols will be corrupted and shaped by left-wing discourse, and everything we once held dear will become a bitter mockery.
George Clooney's new movie, The Boys in the Boat, is a rare exception. This true story of the University of Washington's ragtag rowing team and their unlikely quest for gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics aims to first entertain and inspire.
As befits a movie about the Olympic Games, where determined amateur athletes compete for national glory, The Boys in the Boat is unabashedly pro-American. It also promotes masculinity.
Early in the film, nearly 40 men are seen showing up at the shipyard for tryouts for the school's crew. The coach is told that only the best will make it through the rigorous training process, and even fewer will be selected to join the team.
This picture of a straightforward meritocracy, “May the best win,” may seem foreign to viewers in 2024. Where are the obligatory humiliation rituals for white men? Who is making sure this team complies with his DEI standards?
In denouncing participation trophy culture, these boys test the limits of their athletic ability and exemplify the healthy competitive spirit necessary for a successful society. Their brotherhood was earned through joint struggle and common goals, not imposed by busy bureaucrats.
Similarly, their victory is a triumph of the human spirit, not of frivolous political infighting. This means that this victory can inspire everyone, not just those based on specific grievances within a group. Like all meaningful victories, it is motivated not by anger or resentment, but by a healthy love of family, country, and tradition.
Clooney's direction brought Daniel James Brown's best-selling novel of the same name to life. Joel Edgerton as no-nonsense coach Al Ulbrickson and Callum Turner as team leader Joe Lantz are also great. A story of patriotism and perseverance, “The Boys in the Boat'' is highly recommended to be seen by anyone who still loves America.
