The cast of 'The Love Boat' comes together for Ted Lange's Off-Broadway production.

It was a reunion for fans of the Pacific Princess.

The cast of “The Love Boat” gathered to mark the opening night of Ted Lange’s off-Broadway play “Lady Patriot” on a Tuesday evening in New York City.

Lange, who is 77, was joined by his former co-stars Fred Grandi (also 77), Bernie Copel (92), and Jill Whelan (58) at Theatre Row.

“The Lady Patriot” draws inspiration from real-life events, exploring the complex themes of prejudice and patriotism through the stories of three women during the Civil War: Valina Davis, Elizabeth Van Lou, and Mary Bowser.

The plot delves into the secrets surrounding Confederate President Jefferson Davis, with questions about who among them is leaking information to the enemy.

Running for a limited engagement from September 6th to 20th, the cast also includes Josie Di Vincentso, Gord Goodman, Chrystifaris, Derek Powell, and Count Stoval.

Lange’s foray into this historical narrative came after he read about Elizabeth Van Lou and the role of Mary Bowser, a black woman who worked as a spy for the Union. He mentioned how incorporating Valina Davis into the story highlighted different perspectives on patriotism.

Reflecting on the chance to reconnect, Lange expressed enthusiasm about working with his “Love Boat” colleagues. “There’s a unique chemistry we share, and it’s wonderful to see our love for theatre come to life on stage,” he said.

“The Love Boat,” which aired on ABC for nine seasons from September 1977 to May 1986, featured Captain Merrill Stubing (played by Gavin McLeod) and his crew aboard the Pacific Princess. McLeod, known for his role in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” sadly passed away in May 2021 at the age of 90.

Lange portrayed bartender Isaac Washington, while Grandi played “Gopher” Smith and Copel took on the role of Dr. Adam Bricker. Lauren Tewes and Ted McGinley also played significant roles, among others.

After “Lady Patriot” concludes on September 20th, the “Love Boat” cast plans to reunite later this year for an event celebrating their legacy with Princess Cruises. Lange, Grandi, Copel, and Whelan—along with Tewes—will embark on a seven-night cruise featuring guest star Charo, departing from Galveston, Texas, on November 16th.
