U.S. Plans Food Aid for Gaza
On Monday, President Trump addressed reporters in Scotland, announcing a plan for the United States to work with European allies to set up food distribution centers in Gaza, aimed at helping Palestinians facing severe food shortages.
“You have a lot of starving people,” he highlighted.
However, he also made it clear that he does not support recognizing Palestine as a state, showing indifference to European countries that might consider such recognition, as reported by Politico. Trump expressed concern that aid might be misappropriated by Hamas.
These comments were made while standing alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. When asked about Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s claim that there is no starvation in Gaza, Trump responded hesitantly.
“I don’t know. I mean, based on television, I would say ‘not particularly,’ because those children look very hungry,” he remarked, noting that the U.S. has provided $60 million in humanitarian aid. “Some of those kids are — that’s real starvation stuff.”
“We’re giving a lot of money and a lot of food, and other nations are now stepping up,” Trump added. “It’s a mess. They have to get food and safety right now.”
“I see it, and you can’t fake that. So, we’re going to be even more involved,” he continued, mentioning previous airlifts and airdrops. He noted that he had spoken with Netanyahu over the weekend and suggested a different approach to aid distribution.
During the announcement, Trump criticized Hamas for not agreeing to release more hostages, mentioning that they are reportedly still holding around 50, following the violent events of October 7, although only about 20 of those are believed to be alive.
Starmer quickly echoed Trump’s sentiments, describing the situation as “a humanitarian crisis, right? It’s an absolute catastrophe. … I think people in Britain are revolted at seeing what they’re seeing on their screens.”
