The Chosen Achieves New Guinness World Record
For the second time this year, The Chosen has been recognized by Guinness World Records. A new global milestone has been set.
Last month, the Bible-inspired streaming series was honored as the most translated season of a streaming series, reaching an impressive 125 languages worldwide—surpassing the previous record of 86 languages also held by its first season.
The Chosen is notably the first multi-season series that centers on Jesus, particularly focusing on his impact on his disciples, followers, and the larger community. Season 6 of the seven-season series is set to premiere this fall.
According to the Guinness website, Mark was acknowledged for this achievement on February 20th.
The Come and See Foundation, a faith-based nonprofit, is behind the funding and translation efforts for the series.
“People are really searching for the truth,” said James Barnett, CEO of Come and See, in an interview. “They’re looking for answers.”
Barnett described The Chosen as “a phenomenon of our generation,” noting, “Nothing in entertainment has resonated with audiences like this since the 1979 Jesus Film.”
He emphasized how the series showcases Jesus’ humanity and connects individuals around the globe to him.
This world record achievement is a step towards Come and See’s ambitious goal of translating The Chosen into 600 languages. Barnett mentioned that the use of artificial intelligence has accelerated this process. A few years ago, the aim was set at 100 dubbed and 500 subtitled languages. Dubbing involves replacing dialogue with voiceovers in a different language, while subtitles show translated text on screen without altering the original audio. Now, there’s optimism that dubbing could expand into the hundreds.
Barnett noted that AI is “fast-tracking” the translation process.
Reaching the target of 600 languages will require a significant effort to translate 33,600 episodes spread across seven seasons, each containing eight episodes.
“We’re really seeing lives touched around the world,” Barnett concluded.
