Insights from Political Strategist Mark McKinnon
Mark McKinnon, who has worked with high-profile political figures like George W. Bush and John McCain, found himself surprised during the last election cycle. He never anticipated the strong conservative voice among Gen Z or how platforms like TikTok would serve as a megaphone for their messages.
“It was a shock. Suddenly, I started seeing this guy named Charlie Kirk everywhere on TikTok,” McKinnon remarked. He mentioned that he and others had traditional views on Gen Z’s behavior and engagement levels during elections, which turned out to be quite off the mark.
This realization prompted him to attend a Charlie Kirk event in Atlanta, Georgia. Observing the enthusiastic crowd—including participants who didn’t fit the stereotypical profile—was enlightening for him.
“The whole experience opened my eyes to what’s happening with this group,” he explained, noting how Kirk utilized social media to draw in attendees. The lively atmosphere was palpable, with Kirk engaging thoroughly with all audience inquiries.
Interestingly, Kirk wasn’t just attracting young men; the demographics were more diverse, even featuring left-leaning individuals who posed questions, albeit in a non-confrontational manner.
“Charlie was a compelling presence,” McKinnon stated. He reflected on how certain moments, reminiscent of Ben Shapiro’s style, drew attention by presenting facts and logic in unique ways. “Yet, it seemed like Charlie was carving out his own path,” he added.
