The Collapse of Assad is a ‘Berlin Wall Moment’

Rep. Joe Wilson Supports Trump’s Middle East Strategy

Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) expressed his support for President Trump’s approach to the Middle East, particularly advocating for the repeal of the Caesar Act during an interview with Breitbart News on Saturday. This followed the publication of an OP-ED discussing recent developments in Syria and the region.

In his OP-ED released on Friday, Wilson talked about a recent trip to Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon, where he was accompanied by Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Ambassador Tom Barrack. He claimed to see a historic chance for peace and stability in light of President Assad’s looming departure after December 2024 and the potential for Syria’s reconstruction.

During the interview, Wilson emphasized that Trump’s initiatives have created “real opportunities” for stabilization in both Syria and the broader Middle East. He drew a comparison between Assad’s potential downfall and the fall of the Berlin Wall, defending Trump’s assertive methods aimed at disarming Hezbollah in Lebanon and removing Iranian forces from Syria. Notably, he pointed out that the Lebanese government has started steps to disarm Hezbollah, which he views as a “ripple effect” of Assad’s diminished power.

Wilson recounted a meeting in Damascus with Defense Minister Alshara and members of the Christian Cabinet, highlighting efforts to establish a more inclusive administration. He remarked on the extensive humanitarian damage caused by Assad’s regime, noting that about half a million people have died and millions have been displaced, making Syria a unique case of such widespread dislocation.

On a positive note, he mentioned that around 2 million Syrians have returned to their homes, framing it as a meaningful opportunity for rebuilding and establishing a stable, sovereign nation.

Wilson also connected these events to broader global dynamics, referencing a summit in Beijing involving key figures like Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. He outlined that their intentions are clear, with China’s military buildup and Russia’s ambitions posing threats to regional stability.

In his view, the Chinese Communist Party could become the predominant global power by 2049, dubbing its military growth as “the greatest peacetime accumulation in world history.”

Wilson praised Trump’s direct engagement with international leaders, including Kim and Putin, asserting that Trump’s decisive actions, such as targeting Iran’s nuclear capabilities without deploying U.S. troops long-term, are commendable.

He asserted that Trump is always “trying” to collaborate with others, but when faced with betrayal, his responses are resolute, ensuring he stands up for American interests. For instance, he highlighted a significant airstrike in Tehran that aimed to neutralize Iran’s nuclear threats against the U.S. and Israel.

Wilson’s comments further emphasized a bipartisan effort to repeal the Caesar Act, which has garnered support from figures like Rep. Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), Sen. Shaheen, and Rand Paul (R-KY). He argued that lifting such sanctions would enable American companies to take charge of Syria’s reconstruction, bolster Israel’s security, and inhibit the reemergence of Russian, Chinese, or Iranian influence in the region.

He concluded that while the road ahead may not be flawless, the peace initiatives presented by Barrack and Trump’s strategic vision could pave the way for greater stability in Syria, potentially facilitating the return of U.S. troops stationed there.
