AI assistants are meant to simplify our lives, right? Tools like Microsoft Copilot help us draft emails, summarize documents, and answer questions quickly. However, security researchers are sounding alarms about a potential issue: a single malicious link could transform that convenience into a privacy headache. Recently, a new attack method was found that illustrates how attackers can commandeer Copilot sessions to extract data without raising any red flags on your screen.

Here’s the gist: Copilot is tied to the Microsoft account you’re logged into. So, if an attacker gains access to your active session—even without you realizing it—they might be able to pilfer your data in the background.

Researchers from Varonis identified a technique known as “Reprompt.” Essentially, it allows an attacker to embed instructions within a seemingly harmless Copilot link, prompting the AI to act on their behalf. Since Copilot is connected to your Microsoft account, it can access your previous interactions and certain personal data. While there are generally safeguards in place against data leaks, this so-called Reprompt method bypasses some of those protections.

The attack can begin with just one click. If you open a specially crafted Copilot link sent to you via email or message, it may automatically process hidden commands embedded within it. There are no pop-ups or warnings, so you might not even notice anything amiss. What’s really concerning is that even if you close the tab, the session remains active for a while, meaning the attack doesn’t stop right away.

Varonis discovered that Copilot can accept instructions formatted through web address parameters. An attacker can conceal commands in the link, making Copilot execute them as soon as the page loads. To work around the security measures Copilot typically employs, researchers got creative. They inserted commands directly into the link, which allowed Copilot to access information that shouldn’t normally be shared. They also utilized a technique where, on the second attempt at a request, the protective measures might falter, letting the attacker gain even more information over time.

Microsoft and Varonis worked together to address this vulnerability, and a fix was implemented during the January 2026 Patch Tuesday update. Thankfully, there’s no evidence suggesting that Reprompt was exploited in the wild before the fix came into play. Still, it shines a light on a broader issue: AI assistants wield significant access and authority, which becomes quite hazardous if protection mechanisms fail.

Notably, this issue is limited to Copilot Personal; businesses using Microsoft 365 Copilot have extra security layers in place to mitigate risks.

Microsoft acknowledged the problem and expressed gratitude to Varonis for reporting it responsibly, stating that they’ve introduced protections to counter similar tactics going forward.

Even with these fixes, taking proactive steps to safeguard your data is crucial. Here are some recommendations:

  1. Install Updates: Ensure your operating system and browser are regularly updated. Security patches are most effective when applied promptly.

  2. Be Cautious with Links: Treat Copilot and AI links with the same caution as login links. If you’re unsure about the source, it’s often safer to access the tool directly rather than clicking on a link.

  3. Use a Password Manager: These tools can help generate strong passwords, making it tougher for attackers to gain access.

  4. Enable Two-Factor Authentication: Adding an extra layer of protection can thwart unauthorized access attempts.

  5. Limit Personal Information Online: Reducing your digital footprint can minimize the information available to an attacker.

  6. Install Strong Antivirus Software: Modern antivirus solutions can help detect suspicious activity related to your browser.

  7. Monitor Account Activity: Regularly review your account for any unusual logins or actions.

  8. Be Specific in Requests: When using AI tools, avoid vague instructions. Keeping requests narrow can help limit any unintended actions.

While the Reprompt issue doesn’t imply that using Copilot is unsafe, it highlights how much trust these tools require. Awareness and prudent behavior in the age of AI are essential.
