Colts Quarterback Anthony Richardson’s Injury Update

Looks like we’re gearing up for some interesting competition in Indianapolis.

Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is thought to have recovered from a recent shoulder injury. A report from ESPN indicates that as training camp kicks off next week, he’ll be in a direct showdown with Daniel Jones for the starting role.

Richardson had to sit out the last two weeks of Colts practice in June due to shoulder pain.

This was quite concerning for the team. After all, Richardson had surgery on his AC joint last year, which followed a challenging rookie season where he only played four games.

Initially, the Colts believed that some rest would alleviate the issues. But it seems Richardson didn’t just slow down. He spent the last few weeks in Florida, working with a personal coach and reportedly throwing the ball with some serious velocity.

Upon his return to Indianapolis before training camp, it’ll be the first time the medical staff checks in on him since that painful June experience.

Richardson is eager to be fit for camp. The Colts certainly need him, especially with Jones entering the competition after signing a one-year, $14 million deal this offseason.

The Colts have described this as an open competition. Coach Shane Steichen is emphasizing the need for consistent evaluations between Richardson and Jones.

Remember, Richardson was the fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft from Florida. His rookie season showed promise, racking up four rushing touchdowns and three passing touchdowns, although he did throw one interception.

Sadly, his season ended abruptly with shoulder surgery, but he made his way back in 2024, starting 11 out of 17 games. Out of those, he missed six due to two injuries, which included a stretch of four games on the bench.

Last season, Richardson ended up with eight passing touchdowns and six rushing touchdowns but struggled with interceptions, totaling 12. His completion percentage dropped significantly, from 59.5% in his rookie year to just 47.7%.

He’s undoubtedly talented, but this season is crucial for proving himself. And let’s not forget about Jones, who has his own agenda.

At 28, Jones was released by the Giants after a rough six-season stint where he ended up with a 24-44-1 record as a starter.

He then joined the Vikings, where he backed up Sam Darnold, but now he’s ready to attempt a comeback with the Colts. Instead of clashing with 2024 Top 10 pick JJ McCarthy in Minnesota, he’s looking to revitalize his career here and challenge Richardson for the starting job.
