While many travelers hope for swift security checks and straightforward airport designs, some U.S. airports stand out above the rest.

Recently, over 2,300 travelers applauded one Pacific Northwest airport for its exceptional decor and dining options. It even offers therapy llamas, which could help ease pre-flight nerves for those needing a little extra support.

An examination by researchers—who evaluated more than 450,000 Yelp reviews—looked at various factors such as gate capacity and parking across over 450 public airports. They then whittled it down to the top 50.

Sheldon Jacobson, an engineering professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, shared insights on what makes airports effective, noting, “The best airports meet your needs and get you to your destination with as few interruptions as possible.” It’s interesting, though, because that can vary from person to person, right?

Here’s a look at the top ten airports:

10. Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW)

Detroit’s airport snagged the tenth spot on the list. Travelers were especially impressed with the underground tunnels, which transport them smoothly through the airport. Plus, there’s a stunning fountain in the McNamara terminal that mimics a flight map.

9. Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC)

Coming in at number nine, SLC’s recent renovations have made it a favorite. It features ample space, natural light, and lovely mountain views, which is—well, quite refreshing, honestly. People even appreciated the better-than-average restroom facilities.

8. Indianapolis International Airport (IND)

Ranked eighth, this airport is noted for its straightforward design and soaring ceilings. One traveler mentioned that everything felt streamlined, which is maybe what you want in an airport. There’s also a popular steakhouse, which is quite a treat!

7. Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ)

New Mexico’s ABQ offers a unique southwestern architecture that has a cozy, local feel. Plus, there’s quality coffee to enjoy. It’s kind of inviting, don’t you think?

6. Rhode Island TF Green International Airport (PVD)

Survey participants highlighted PVD’s convenient amenities, including a free library and live music, not to mention easy navigation.

5. Seattle Painefield International Airport (PAE)

Travelers described Painefield as resembling a luxury hotel more than a typical airport. The views of the snowy Olympic Mountains definitely add to the ambiance, and there’s even a wine bar to enjoy.

4. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP)

MSP scored high for its peaceful atmosphere, with quiet areas for relaxation and local films to watch. It’s intriguing how there’s even a shop inspired by “Purple Rain” that sells T-shirts featuring spam—a quirky touch for sure.

3. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)

DCA, located near Washington, D.C., is appreciated for its convenience. The short walk to the gates is accompanied by some of the best sightseeing views—from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial.

2. Long Beach Airport (LGB)

In second place is Long Beach Airport, noted for its historic terminal and beautifully landscaped outdoor areas. Passengers often talk about its easy navigation, which is, I suppose, quite comforting when you’re rushing to catch a flight.

1. Portland International Airport (PDX)

Finally, PDX takes the top spot thanks to unique features like live trees and illuminated ceilings. Travelers enjoy a vibrant atmosphere with live music and even a therapy llama from time to time. It seems to set a pretty welcoming tone, doesn’t it?

So, after observing the extensive feedback, it’s clear: airports really can shape how we start our journeys. Whether it’s the food, the layout, or those unexpected little touches, they can make a difference in an otherwise hectic travel experience.
