House Speaker Mike Johnson Discusses Government Shutdown
During a press conference marking the 20th day of the Democratic shutdown, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) indicated that Democrats will have another opportunity to reopen the government on Monday.
Johnson criticized Democrats for blocking the government’s functioning over what he described as a “totally clean, bipartisan continuing resolution.”
He expressed that Democrats seem unapologetic about the challenges faced by affected Americans and stated:
This is a political stunt, unprecedented and quite costly, selfish, and dangerous in the history of U.S. Congress. As we’ve reiterated day by day, every American impacted by this foolishness, along with Senate Democrats, show no regret whatsoever.
“They remain indifferent to the suffering of hardworking families, soldiers, law enforcement officers, veterans, seniors, those with disabilities, women, infants, and children. Their services and paychecks are being delayed because of the Democrats’ antics,” he added.
He emphasized that Democrats would have a unique chance to back a clean continuing resolution, noting that Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) intends to bring the bill for a vote.
“They’re getting another chance. Democrats will have a 12th opportunity to support this bill,” he remarked, reminding everyone that Democrats had previously endorsed it.
“This is the same measure they backed just seven months ago. Chuck Schumer even praised it on the floor, claiming it was the only viable option. And let’s not forget, they did it 13 times during the Biden administration, but it seems things have shifted now,” he pointed out, referring to the No Kings protests as revealing the true nature of the situation.

“Democrats have made it clear this is a political issue. The politics were evident this week with the protests, crowds, and rallies,” Johnson concluded.
