Senate Candidate Uses Scripture to Discuss Abortion
James Talarico, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, recently made controversial remarks on the “Joe Rogan Experience,” intertwining scripture with his views on abortion. He emphasized the importance of consent in creation, referencing the Biblical story of the Annunciation where God seeks Mary’s approval before the incarnation.
Talarico stated, “Before God approaches Mary, He seeks her consent. It’s quite remarkable. In the Gospel of Luke, an angel asks Mary whether she is willing to accept this role, and she replies, ‘If it’s God’s will, let it be.’ To me, this highlights that creation must always happen with consent,” he remarked during an interview in July.
He continued, “The sanctity of creation hinges on the freedom and consent of individuals involved. You can’t compel someone into creation—it must come from their own choice.”
Furthermore, Talarico believes that these principles align with the teachings and life of Jesus. His remarks sparked mixed reactions from listeners.
Commenting on Talarico’s statements, Steve Deace, a host on “The Steve Deace Show,” expressed concern about the interpretation of faith in politics. He argued that the church is facing challenges and stressed the necessity for candidates who can challenge current interpretations of faith. “We cannot let our beliefs be distorted or redefined,” he emphasized.
Deace reflected on the historical context of Jesus and Mary, drawing parallels to contemporary discussions about refugees and societal narratives. He stressed that narratives around topics like abortion require careful scrutiny, invoking examples from Jewish law to underscore his perspective on the sanctity of life.
He expressed skepticism about the idea that a young girl, such as Mary, would choose to terminate a pregnancy, labeling such implications as deeply troubling.
Deace also noted that discussions around these themes will only become more prevalent in the future.
