The Democrats are facing their own Epstein issue.

The Democrats have an Epstein problem of their own

The Political Landscape: A Soccer Fan’s Perspective

Being part of a political party feels a lot like rooting for a college soccer team. When the rival wins, it’s easy to think they didn’t play fair. And if they’re accused of something, we rush to declare them guilty. If they actually are guilty, then it’s all about demanding the toughest penalties possible. But when it’s your party or team under scrutiny? Well, that’s a different story. Suddenly, it’s about downplaying the issue, shifting blame, and defending actions. If you face consequences, it’s definitely unfair persecution.

Take it from me: I’m a Buckeyes fan and I vote Democrat in Ohio.

Democrats have been trying to leverage the situation as President Trump deals with the backlash over his unfulfilled promise to release the Epstein Files. It’s hard to say just how much this will impact Trump and Republicans in the midterms, but polls indicate that only 17% of voters and 40% of Republicans approve of his handling of this issue.

Additionally, a recent article from the Wall Street Journal about Trump’s correspondence with Epstein has added more layers to their connection. Maybe, just maybe, Democrats can find something that can truly penetrate Trump’s tough exterior. But there’s a significant hurdle that Democrats must overcome.

Several of their own are tied to Epstein. If they want the fallout from the Epstein Files to keep focusing on Trump, they need to act quickly. This isn’t about a balanced viewpoint; it’s a situation that could easily become a bipartisan conversation.

It’s no secret that Jeffrey Epstein had many high-profile acquaintances across various fields, including politics and entertainment. Some of these individuals are Democrats. Now, I’m not suggesting that knowing Epstein equals guilt; it’s crucial to stress that, even with all the Wall Street Journal revelations, there isn’t proof that Trump committed any crimes.

Still, much like college football, you don’t necessarily need to cheat to be seen as a fraud. Democrats must come together on this, which means getting their ducks in a row before going public. Expecting Trump to release information that makes Democrats look bad feels certain; we’ve seen this play before. His attempt to label the situation as a “Democratic hoax” against Biden fell flat. Therefore, it’s likely his next move will be to unveil files that cast Democrats in a negative light.

The Democratic establishment must be proactive. They need to address any connections to Epstein and ensure that no fellow Democrats, donors, or associates are implicated in misconduct. It seems straightforward, but Democrats have a former president linked to Epstein, which complicates things. Every senator, governor, representative, and DNC official should pledge to distance themselves from any wrongdoing associated with Epstein and Gislaine Maxwell. Then, they should challenge Republicans to do the same. The GOP knows one figure they won’t disown: the current president.

Supporters of Trump may wish for a conspiracy to protect the elite, but that belief hinges on whether those elite figures are Democrats. Democrats must clearly state that they will not shield anyone involved in Epstein’s crimes. This is essential to counter the inevitable “both-sides” narrative when any new files drop.

Some might argue that Democrats should just stay out of it, but that would be naïve. History shows us that hypocrisy can come back to haunt them. Just look at how Bill Clinton was treated during his governorship and presidency; Democrats often downplayed his issues. The backlash doesn’t disappear, as demonstrated when Hillary Clinton criticized Trump over the “Access Hollywood” tape, giving him ammunition to claim Democrats were indifferent to women’s issues.

Trump has weathered storms before, adept at flipping accusations. The pattern suggests he’ll likely do it again. With his back against the wall, Trump’s strategy may involve framing the situation as solely a Democratic issue.

Ultimately, the solution for Democrats lies in unity. They need to make it clear that anyone guilty of a crime, regardless of affiliation, will not receive protection from the party. By doing so, they can dismantle the counterargument that both sides are culpable. This could place the blame where it belongs, effectively turning the fallout from Epstein into a significant challenge for Trump.
