Shane Lowry Reflects on Past and Future at British Open
Portrush, Northern Ireland – Shane Lowry feels he’s discovered a solid approach for competing in major tournaments, reminiscent of his victory in 2019 when he secured the Claret Jug at the British Open held at Royal Portrush.
“Honestly, when everything is going well, I’m happy,” shared the 38-year-old Irishman on Monday. “But sometimes, you get anxious because you feel the pressure to perform.”
“It’s interesting; when I struggle a bit, that’s usually when I play my best golf,” he continued. “If I can keep away from becoming too complacent and manage my expectations, that’s when I really excel.”
When asked about his current feelings heading into this Open Championship, he chuckled, noting, “I’ve felt pretty good the last couple of days, which is slightly concerning. I guess I’ll have to perform well over the next few days.”
While Lowry hasn’t clinched a win this year, his season has seen him as a runner-up twice and posting four top-10 finishes out of sixteen events. However, he’s missed the cut in the last two major championships, the PGA and the US Open, which he admits is disappointing. “I take pride in not missing cuts at significant tournaments,” he said. “I had chances in both events, and it’s frustrating, but there’s still time this year to turn it around and get that victory.”
This week, Lowry is focused on trying to recapture the magic he felt back in 2019. “Winning back then was a lifelong dream,” he reflected.
When asked why he believed everything fell into place for him that year, he responded with a smile. “At the time, I couldn’t really pinpoint it. Looking back, I had some solid results leading into the tournament,” Lowry noted. “I missed the cut at the Masters, but I had a decent first round at the PGA. Then there was that second round at the US Open, where I performed exceptionally to make the cut.”
“After finishing second to Rory [McIlroy] in Canada, I felt really good about my game overall. Coming back to a place like Portrush, which I knew and loved, just made everything click. I was at my best.”
He remembered that week filled with nerves, admitting, “I was anxious, but that’s just because I wanted it so much. Why it worked out? I still can’t say for sure. It just… did.”
Now, after his significant win in 2019, what does Lowry anticipate for his local fans this week?
“I’ve prepared thoroughly for this tournament. Now, it’s all about what I can bring to the course on Thursday morning and how it unfolds.”
