The four most overrated players in the NBA, according to the top 100 list

NBA Rankings: Off-Season Content Sparks Debate

The off-season buzz in the NBA primarily revolves around Jonathan Kuminga’s contract issues with the Golden State Warriors. Meanwhile, ESPN’s ranking of the league’s top 100 players has surfaced as a way to kick off discussions and speculate about the upcoming season as training camp begins.

This ranking serves as a prediction of how players might perform throughout the season. For instance, Cooper Flagg, currently placed at number 52, might not come out strong right away as the youngest player in the league. However, by playoff time, he could potentially make a notable impact for the Dallas Mavericks.

It’s interesting how quickly things can change. At the start of last season, Cade Cunningham of the Detroit Pistons was ranked 67th by ESPN. After a strong performance, he climbed to 12th place. Personally, I have mixed feelings about Cunningham; while I admire his growth, some might argue he’s among the most overrated players in the game. Looking through ESPN’s list, there are definitely players who fit that description, but we’ll get to the underrated ones later.

No. 87: Jonas Valanciunas, C, Denver Nuggets

This one’s hard to wrap my head around. Valanciunas has had moments when he performed as a top 90 player, but at 33 years old, I wonder if he can still deliver, especially since there’s talk about him wanting to play in Europe. Last season, he split time between the Wizards and Kings, averaging 10.4 points and 7.7 rebounds. I think he could serve well as a solid backup center, yet when you’ve got someone like Nikola Jokic dominating the minutes, Valanciunas’s role could feel limited. Last year, he recorded a turnover rate that raised eyebrows, and while he’s still decent defensively, his mobility is a concern. Not to mention, he struggled with his three-point shooting. Overall, ranking him here feels quite generous to me.

No. 30: Scottie Barnes, F, Toronto Raptors

At first glance, Barnes’ stats last season are impressive: 19.3 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 5.8 assists. But let’s not overlook how some players can pile up numbers when given plenty of opportunities. His scoring efficiency was lacking, finishing below league average. Barnes also struggled from beyond the arc, making just 27.1% of his attempts. His defense gets high marks and he’s an excellent passer, which is great. However, he might be better utilized in a different role. With Brandon Ingram joining the Raptors, it’s unclear how this will influence Barnes’s performance. He’s undoubtedly talented but is rated a bit higher than I think is warranted.

No. 83: Jonathan Kuminga, F, Golden State Warriors

Kuminga has some real physical tools—he’s explosive and can score. But there’s a reason he hasn’t fully earned Steve Kerr’s trust yet. Approaching 23, he’s shown to be efficient at times, but his inconsistency is troubling. Last season, his scoring was below average, and while he had moments of decent shooting, they weren’t consistent enough. If he can find a reliable role as a defender or playmaker, that would help his value, but so far, that potential hasn’t fully materialized. I think being ranked in the top 100 may not be justified for him right now.

No. 69: Josh Hart, G/F, New York Knicks

Hart has established himself as a solid role player—he’s great at creating plays and finishing at the rim. However, his limitations in handling the ball and shooting from distance really showed during the playoffs. Looking at his recent shooting numbers, he struggles when contested, often being protected by bigger players. I also find his defensive skills a bit overrated; he’s rated as a neutral defender in various metrics. The Knicks appeared to thrive more without him on the floor, which raises questions about his effectiveness in critical situations. While he contributes, I think his ranking is a little too high.
