Democrats in Congress have shown striking hypocrisy with their recent vote to shut down the government.
For months now, they’ve claimed that the Trump administration is undermining the Department of Veterans Affairs, cutting crucial benefits, and negatively impacting veterans.
Yet, these allegations don’t hold up under scrutiny.
In reality, the VA has been performing significantly better under President Trump compared to the Biden administration.
The statistics tell a compelling story: there’s been a 45% decrease in the backlog of veterans waiting for VA benefits while processing more claims than ever. This year, the department is also investing $800 million for infrastructure upgrades to enhance patient safety. They’ve expanded service to include over 1.4 million appointments outside of normal hours, aiming for greater convenience for veterans. Plus, they’ve opened 17 new clinics this year, which is supposed to bring care closer to veterans. And that’s just the start.
But after months of spreading these unverified accusations about veterans’ services being slashed, Congressional Democrats have taken action that actually does just that.
The government shutdown has stalled key services and left thousands of dedicated employees working without pay.
Specifically, the effects of the Democratic-led shutdown include:
- Over 30,000 VA employees will not receive pay until the government is back in operation.
- Career counseling and transition assistance programs for veterans will pause.
- The GI Bill Hotline will not be operational.
- Local VA offices will be closed.
- The Veterans Administration will halt public relations and support efforts.
- Veterans will miss out on permanent headstone installations or grounds maintenance at VA National Cemeteries.
- Applications won’t be processed before burials are needed.
- New presidential commemorative certificates will not be printed.
It’s hard to argue that Democrats aren’t to blame for this situation. Even legacy media, which tends to favor Democrats, has acknowledged the responsibility lies with them.
For instance, the Associated Press pointed out that “Democrats voted to shut down. Now they have to find a way out.”
In contrast, The New Yorker attempted to explain “why the Democratic Party shut down the government.”
The ramifications of this shutdown reach beyond the VA; the overall economy is losing an estimated $15 billion each week due to the shutdown.
Countless essential workers, from military members to air traffic controllers and federal agents, are facing unpaid work. Additionally, contractors who rely on government contracts are left in financial jeopardy as they won’t receive back pay.
Interestingly, while the Democrats support this shutdown, they continue to receive their paychecks.
It becomes more troubling when considering the reasons behind the Democrats’ actions. They’re pushing for free medical care for illegal immigrants. This plan could cost nearly $200 billion over the next decade for health care for noncitizens, promoting higher Medicaid reimbursements for undocumented immigrants than for American citizens, including the elderly and children.
Fortunately, despite the shutdown, veterans’ health care will remain intact. VA Medical Centers, outpatient clinics, and other facilities will keep operating. Veterans’ benefits—compensation, pensions, education, and housing—will be processed as usual. Burial services will continue at Virginia National Cemetery, and the VA Contact Center and Crisis Line remain accessible around the clock.
A Democratic-led shutdown brings challenges for everyone. Still, there’s a silver lining: it highlights how Democrats prioritize politics over the needs of veterans, VA employees, and everyday Americans.
