Tragic School Shooting in Bend, Oregon
The firearm utilized by the 16-year-old who fatally shot three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, was reportedly a birthday present from his mother, as noted by several sources.
The weapon, a Maverick 88 pump-action 12-gauge shotgun, was legally acquired in August 2026 by Shauntai Nickerson for her son, Griffin J. John II, intended for recreational activities, according to reports on Tuesday.
On October 15th, the shooter began by firing at a pickup truck driving past the school, prompting the driver to make the first 911 call. Following this, he forced entry into the building by shooting through the glass of the double doors. Once inside, the shooter attacked the first classroom he encountered, resulting in the deaths of all four victims and injuring two others.
Authorities indicate that the victims included children aged 5, 8, and 11, along with a 25-year-old teacher named Megan Lambert. The two injured individuals comprise a 7-year-old girl and a 54-year-old teacher.
Fortunately, the shooter was ultimately killed by 36-year-old Kaylub Giamanco, who observed John firing at the pickup truck and decided to pursue him into the school. Giamanco is a local resident and a parent of two daughters enrolled at Silver Rail Elementary.
Law enforcement stated that the suspect had previously attended the school and was known to have “special needs.” As of now, authorities have not established a clear motive for the attack.
According to Bend police, evidence collection at the school is expected to conclude by the end of the day, after which control of the premises will revert to the school district. Investigators are also reviewing the shooter’s computer, phone, social media activity, and search history to uncover potential motives.
