Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., said Sunday on MSNBC’s “Velshi” that “The Handmaid’s Tale” will become a guidebook for the Republican Party if former President Donald Trump wins the November election.
“I like to think of a Sharpie in a hurricane,” Raskin said. “Donald Trump tried to ignore, and in some ways did ignore, the scientists at NOAA and the National Weather Service that were saying the hurricane was going to hit Alabama and cause massive chaos in places in Alabama that it was expected to hit and places that it wasn’t expected to hit. That’s what they wanted to do with the federal government, they want to ignore the protection of expertise and civil servants. They want to create something called Schedule F, take away tens of thousands of jobs of professional civil servants that are currently protected, put them directly under the president and appoint political stooges and lackeys.”
He added: “They only do what the president wants. They’ve talked about things like immigration detention camps, mass deportations, more aggressive measures against abortion, banning abortion pills in the country. Right now, a third of American women live in states where abortion is a crime, and they, including Chairman Johnson, want to spread that across the country. They’re in favor of the ‘Life Begins at Conception’ bill, and that’s just part of what they want to do. If you haven’t read ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ read it, because so much of it is the Christian white nationalist formula that they want to make the center of federal action.”
