Beloved Yankees Announcer John Sterling Passes Away
It was a heavy day for Yankees fans, with shocking news breaking on WFAN.
The loss of John Sterling, the iconic voice of the Yankees and a familiar radio announcer, was announced during the “Boomer and Geo” show. He was 87 years old.
“I’ve got some sad news from Al,” co-host Greg Gianotti shared. “It’s been confirmed that one of the great voices in New York sports history has passed away. John Sterling has died,” he said, as shock spread across the studio.
“Honestly, I never thought this would happen,” Gianotti continued. “I mean, he always seemed so lively the last time we heard from him. This is just brutal news. John was exceptional—a true entertainer. We enjoyed so many years with him.”
“He embodied everything a play-by-play broadcaster should be: his love for the audience, for sports, and, of course, for the Yankees. His voice will be unforgettable. How many people can we say we’ll remember for years to come? His legacy will stay alive through our memories.”
Co-host Boomer Esiason reflected on the impact of Sterling as well, mentioning, “Tonight’s going to be special at Yankee Stadium.”
“It’s interesting,” Esiason added, “he truly loved the game and the Yankees. He could’ve retired many times but chose to stay. He reminded me of Marv Albert and Sam Rosen. When you’d tune in and hear him, it just felt significant.”
The sports world quickly reacted to the heartbreaking news of Sterling’s passing after 36 seasons with the Yankees.
“The Yankees mourn the loss of legendary broadcaster John Sterling. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and loved ones,” the team stated.
Howie Rose, the Mets’ play-by-play announcer, offered his own tribute.
“I’m deeply saddened to learn of John Sterling’s passing,” he wrote. “He was genuinely one of a kind. When I spoke with him a little over a month ago, things didn’t sound good, but this news is still a shock. Rest in peace, my friend.”
Mike Francesa also shared his thoughts: “I’ve known John for a long time. He found the perfect stage in the Yankees radio booth and owned it for the rest of his career. He truly was the voice of the Yankees. Rest in peace.”
Sujin Waldman, a longtime colleague of Sterling’s, expressed her feelings on Instagram: “Thank you to everyone who reached out! It’s been a tough day, but it’s fitting to celebrate a man who lived life on his own terms! 💔💔”
Journalist Joel Sherman also remembered Sterling, reshareing a video that highlighted a touching moment shared with his family during a difficult time. “I’ve got so many John Sterling stories, but this one meant the most. He was a legend, a kind person. May he rest in peace,” he wrote.
