It’s not often that sports fans across the internet agree, but the Miami Heat’s original Dwyane Wade statue managed it. Unveiled outside the Kaseya Center ahead of the 2024–25 season, the statue quickly became a punchline. Even Wade had a hard time defending its resemblance to him, suggesting the sculpture was meant to capture a moment rather than look exactly like its subject. Fair enough, perhaps, but the jokes kept coming.
The Heat have now made changes. The statue’s head and face were redesigned over the offseason, with the original sculptors working with Wade’s approval. The updated version looks much more like the former Miami star—a pretty clear improvement.
Fans were understandably frustrated by the first attempt. Wade led the Heat to the 2006 championship and later helped bring LeBron James and Chris Bosh to Miami, where the team won two more titles. The original statue didn’t seem to do justice to what he meant to the franchise. At least the team took the criticism seriously and made an effort to fix it.
Miami has had a difficult start to the season, though there’s plenty of time to turn things around. The Heat picked up their first win of the Giannis Antetokounmpo era earlier this week, and the statue update feels like a small bit of good timing. I wasn’t especially optimistic about the team coming into the season, but if they show the same attention to detail on the court, they may be fine.
Wade is the greatest player in Heat history, as far as I’m concerned. He is Miami basketball to me, and now his statue is a more fitting tribute to his career.
