Some places are just enchanting, almost like they belong in a movie. And it seems they really should stay that way.
The famous Chicago-area house from the 1990 classic “Home Alone” is set for significant renovations aimed at reviving its cinematic charm, according to NBC Chicago.
Project manager Scott Price shared, “Our vision is to bring back the warmth and love from the film.” The renovations are backed by the current owner, whose identity remains undisclosed, after they purchased the house for $5.5 million in January. He mentioned, “There were so many great colors that made it feel like family and home, and we want to recapture that magic.” But, the timeline for the renovations isn’t clear just yet.
In 2021, the property briefly transformed into a movie-themed Airbnb rental, although it had different owners at that time. Only one guest stayed overnight, and the atmosphere was decidedly reminiscent of a set.
The home, situated in the upscale suburb of Winnetka, has become iconic in movie history. Previous marketing images revealed a stark contrast to the opulent style of the fictional McAllister family, triggering frustration among fans.
One commentator observed, “We should take a moment to mourn what was once a home but is now a sterile clinic.” Another person remarked, “If the house had stayed original, I would have paid ten times more. Like a classic car, it holds more value. Now, it looks just like any other house.”
Still, the house draws its fair share of devoted movie fans. One such admirer, Natalie Cole from Ohio, expressed her thoughts: “I saw it online, and it looked so gray and lifeless. I’m really thrilled that the new owners plan to revive it.”
This isn’t the first time the property has paid tribute to its film legacy. During the 2021 holiday season, Airbnb prepared the rental experience to highlight the movie’s aesthetics.
The expansive brick mansion, located in Winnetka, Illinois, sold for $5.5 million earlier this year. Movie enthusiasts continue to visit it today.
In terms of recent transactions, in mid-2024, the 9,126-square-foot house hit the market for $5.25 million. A buyer, the current owner, emerged within just a week. Mackaulay Culkin, the film’s star, once jokingly considered purchasing it “just for a laugh.”
Ultimately, after a seven-month negotiation, the sale was finalized this year for $5.5 million—$250,000 over the asking price. The seller was eager to spend one last Christmas in the house.
Now, with work in progress, it’s perpetually festive there.
“We adore this movie. It was a key part of our childhood, and it’s just as important for the family that owns this home,” Price noted.
