Last weekend, celebrities at the Grammy Awards took the opportunity to criticize Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). However, these vocal “human rights activists” remained notably silent regarding the plight of people suffering under the Iranian regime.
It’s been nearly a month since a report revealed that over 36,500 Iranians were killed by security forces during protests against the government. More recent information suggests that this number could be even higher, potentially by at least 6,000.
Eyewitness accounts from within Iran paint a grim picture—medical professionals struggling to cope with overwhelming numbers of casualties, including countless bodies. It’s almost unimaginable, really. You’d think that a celebrity, known for addressing global issues, might mention this, but there was no mention of Iran at either the Golden Globes or the Grammys.
Where was the outrage directed at Khamenei? Instead, much of the criticism was aimed at former President Donald Trump. It seems that Hollywood’s focus has shifted somewhat, previously targeting Israel with remarks that bordered on anti-Semitic.
It’s clear that while one can question government action regarding immigration enforcement, the inconsistency in condemning human rights violations in Iran compared to a U.S. leader raises eyebrows.
And while it’s certainly within people’s rights to criticize political figures, this selective outrage about human rights is troubling. The last few years have shown a deepening animosity within the entertainment world, especially from those leveraging their fame and online influence.
For instance, on October 7, 2023, more than 1,200 people were tragically killed in Israel, with many more kidnapped by Hamas. The tragedies faced by women, men, and children in captivity were horrific, with accounts of abuse and violence.
Many entertainers across the board condemned Hamas and expressed solidarity with the Israeli people, yet some of Hollywood’s most outspoken activists have not spoken a word.
Take Mark Ruffalo, for example. His vocal criticisms of Israel have been frequent until now, where he has been conspicuously absent since the recent attacks. Only after Israel’s military action in Gaza did he, along with other Marvel stars, comment on the situation.
Interestingly, award-winning actress Susan Sarandon attended an anti-Israel demonstration shortly after the attack, where she claimed that Jews were experiencing their own form of oppression in America. She even joined in chants that called for the end of the Jewish state.
This troubling trend extends to other high-profile figures as well, including Cynthia Nixon and Javier Bardem, indicating a pattern of ignoring serious human rights abuses committed by regimes intent on harming Israel.
In today’s digital age, where online perspectives shape young people’s views, Hollywood might inadvertently normalize anti-Jewish sentiment across the political spectrum. We’ve witnessed the dangers of such ideologies throughout history.
The silence of Hollywood regarding Iran serves as a cautionary tale about rising anti-Semitism—a significant human rights issue that demands our attention.
