Chargers’ O’Mallion Hampton Injured, Set for Extended Absence
Los Angeles Chargers head coach Gym Harbour announced that running back O’Mallion Hampton will be sidelined due to an ankle injury sustained during Sunday’s 27-10 loss to Washington. According to Daniel Popper of Athletic Spots, Hampton was seen leaving the locker room in a walking boot. Tests conducted on Monday confirmed that he will miss at least the next month of play.
During the game against Washington, Hampton was quite busy, racking up 12 carries for 44 yards along with six targets for 26 receiving yards. The injury took place in the fourth quarter while he was running a route. He was soon seen testing his ankle on the sidelines.
This news adds to the Chargers’ woes, as they are currently on a losing streak after a promising 3-0 start to the season. Veteran running back Najee Harris is already out for the season with a torn Achilles, and now Hampton’s injury further weakens the offense. The Chargers are grappling with injuries to key players like Joe Alto, Khalil Mack, and Rush Slater, which complicates their recovery.
For fantasy football managers, Hampton’s absence is a setback. He had recorded 314 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the first five games of his career, along with catching 20 passes, which ranks him fourth among running backs this season. His ability to contribute in the passing game had added considerable value.
With both Hampton and Harris unavailable, Hassan Haskins and Kimani Vidal are likely to share the running back responsibilities moving forward. Their combined performance has been modest, with just 31 rushing yards thus far, which doesn’t inspire much confidence. The Chargers have relied heavily on their aerial game this season, as Justin Herbert targets receivers like Quentin Johnston, Keenan Allen, and Rudd McConkey.
If you plan to pick up either Haskins or Vidal, they should be available on waiver wires across leagues. Alternatively, other options for this week include the Panthers’ Rico Doudle and the Cardinals’ Michael Carter.
As for Hampton, heading to injured reserve means he will be out for at least the next four weeks.
