LAS VEGAS – Brooklyn’s significant summer acquisition has brought back a championship presence to the team. Michael Porter Jr. stands out as the sole player on the roster with a championship ring, something the Nets are striving for.
Manager Jordi Fernandez, who worked alongside Porter during his early years in Denver, is optimistic that Porter’s winning experience will positively influence the younger players on the team.
“He’s excited to be here, and I’m thrilled to work with him again,” Fernandez expressed. “We have a shared history, and we truly valued our time with Michael. He contributes enormously—his work ethic is impressive. It’s encouraging to have someone like him around who understands the championship mentality.”
Porter secured the title in Denver last season after overcoming injuries in the 2021-22 period. The Nets recently traded Cam Johnson for Porter along with Denver’s unprotected first-round draft pick.
This pick could turn out to be invaluable for Brooklyn, especially as Nikola Jokic ages. The move has drawn positive reviews from various sports outlets, with many praising the Nets’ trading strategy.
But the question remains: Will Porter meet expectations during the transition? Can he be more than just a salary cap relief?
On paper, the 6-foot-10 forward seems to mirror Johnson, although that’s where the comparison largely ends.
Having recently celebrated his 27th birthday, Porter has demonstrated resilience, missing only six games over the last two seasons, which is significantly fewer than Johnson’s 43 absences.
However, there’s skepticism about whether he can maintain performance without Jokic.
“He’ll be tasked with responsibilities he hasn’t faced before,” Fernandez noted. “It should be exciting for him, and I believe he’s ready for the challenge.”
Just to put it into context, Porter averaged 17.4 points over the last three years. But when he’s not playing with Jokic? Well, his average dropped to 15.9 points in 22 games, with shooting percentages that aren’t impressive.
Can he find his rhythm outside of Jokic’s playstyle? And can he take on a leadership role with younger teammates?
“I want him to remain true to his character while adapting,” Fernandez emphasized. “That’s what gives me confidence—seeing how he has evolved in his career and the effort he puts in daily.”
“We just need to help him acclimate to his new teammates and the little details that can enhance his experience, like finding a good living situation. Our goal is to help him be the best version of himself.”
Porter is one of the oldest players on the roster, following only the 29-year-old Terrance Mann. It remains to be seen whether he will play as a power forward while competing for minutes with younger wings like Egoldemin and Ziare Williams, or if he’ll pivot to small forward alongside stretch 4 Noah Crowney.
“In the end, I don’t believe that’s crucial. What truly matters is how he defends,” Fernandez mentioned. “Whether he’s positioned as a 1-4, the roles are quite similar for us.”
“Michael is a fantastic catch-and-shoot player. He can isolate, create shots, and rebound effectively. All of these qualities will certainly benefit our strategy and make him an asset.”
