The Knicks know there’s another gear they have to get to

Detroit – A reasonable tally of the best six players in this series includes the five Knicks. They came in with a talent advantage with the Pistons, with two All-Star starters and an offense ranked in the top five of the NBA.

However, every night turned into a struggle heading towards Game 6 on Thursday. Winning was just as difficult as defeat.

They were leading the series, but outperforming the pistons by one point.

Their attacks were trapped in the mud, with too many Haudini performances from the town of Karl Anthony and Mikal Bridges.

The possessions rarely felt smooth.

According to Josh Hart, the good news is that the Knicks were operating at the best of the well. So, in theory, you should have a much higher gear.

Given how the Pistons series unfolded before Thursday, it needs to be much better to compete in the next round with the Celtics.

“Not at all (did we play the best basketball?) and it's not even close,” Hart said. “I think we had a spurt where we played very well and then we had a place where we played badly, namely the third quarter (game 5).

“So we have to make sure we find a way to maintain a good flow and a good rhythm throughout the game. It's playing faster, it makes them make a decision, and when you decide to put them in that position, you can counter them and pay for those mistakes. (town) as well as Mikal and OG (Anunoby) think that's the biggest thing.

Hart always harps on speeding up the pace, which certainly suits his strengths in the transition.

But the Knicks are all things Branson, town and bridges can be made for themselves on half court, and should have advantages in other areas.

Instead, the Knicks filmed just 44% of the shooting in the series on Thursday. It's well below 48% in the regular season. Most vigilant, they averaged 20.7 assists compared to 27.5 assists in the regular season.

The ball stopped moving.

“I think we struggled offensively, offensively,” Branson said. “I feel like I'm developing the ball, I have the ball most of the time, so it starts with me. So, in order to be more aggressive as a team, I need to make better decisions and make sure I put my teammates in the best position.

Is it a product of poor plays, or is it a natural result of ratcheting defensive strength in the playoffs?

“I think it's a mixture of both,” Branson said. “Playoff basketball, we're playing the same (team) for now, this is our sixth time, and I'm sure they know us.

“We are now in a position where we just need to go out and make it, that is not given to us, they are not going to hand over anything.

Of course, all the other higher seeds in the Eastern Conference made it easier. The Knicks were the only ones who didn't make the first round after five games.

The Celtics would have rested before facing the winner of the Knicks Pistons Series.

That's the result that New York hasn't shown its best.

“I don't think I thought this series would be a cakewalk,” Hart said. “This is one of the teams (the Pistons) who are really good coaches and coaching staff. We respect them. So we have to focus on that. The other teams can rest, that's cool for them, you know.
