Two things happened after philanthropist Alex Soros invited Democratic vice presidential candidate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for a recent fundraiser. Both are things I've seen time and time again as a Democratic politician and a leader in progressive advocacy groups.
The person on the right (in this caseformer presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy) disgusting anti-Semitic metaphorhas made Soros look like a puppeteer pulling the strings of a “marionette.”
And the people on the left too I held your hand And warned that it is.probably not useful” Soros can be seen with Waltz.
I'll preface the rest by saying that Alex Soros has been a friend of mine for nearly a decade. Also,my organizationPeople for the American Way, is one of the many organizations that have received support from Soros' Open Society Foundations over the years. And we are proud of that support.
The hatred directed at him and his family is next level. I have seen seemingly well-intentioned people assume that they are benefiting progressive causes by bringing light to the name “Soros.”
So, let me just say this. It's time to change that attitude. First, it is our responsibility to condemn this type of slander, which is not only an intolerable attack on specific individuals, but also on all people of Jewish culture and faith. And second, we feel obligated to point out that attacks like this are a dog whistle to certain conservative voters, especially this year, when right-wing anti-Semitism is flourishing more than ever.
It is deeply disturbing to see how former President Donald Trump's campaign and administration have created a subtle and invisible licensing structure for anti-Semitism.
Earlier this year, the New York Timesreported“Throughout the Trump era, many Republicans have helped inject thinly veiled anti-Semitic messages into the mainstream with deep historical roots.”
This code often refers to conspiracy theories about “globalists” or “worldwide cabals” controlling world events. Trump himself seems to fully buy into the anti-Semitic trope. Donation email He attacked Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg as a “Soros prosecutor” carrying out a “puppet master conspiracy.” that was the only thing hundreds of In Trump campaign communications sent to supporters, he parroted the theme of a “global cabal” and often cited Soros by name.
Against this background, the right wing is doing everything in its power toSupported by Soros” an adjective aimed at silencing progressives.
Want to know if it's working? If you're an organization or politician who touts support from the United Auto Workers or the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.gates foundationorford foundationask yourself if you would whisper about supporting the Open Society Foundations instead.
Now ask yourself why.
In particular, progressive advocacy groups open society foundationan organization with a history of supporting abortion rights, environmental protection, criminal justice reform, and ending racial and religious persecution.
For organizations like ours, it would be chilling to say anything less than what our opponents say: that charities like the Open Society Foundations, and the families behind them, are idiots. We know all too well what happens when the fear of the bogeyman grows and is nurtured by cynical politicians.
Throughout American history, we've seen that fear turn into Islamophobia, racism, homophobia, and, of course, anti-Semitism. We've seen it become dangerous and deadly here and around the world.
So this is my charge to my fellow progressives. We will not run away from hateful attacks by the right against us and our allies. We lead the chorus of condemnation. We embrace each other with pride and will not let the bigots win.
Mr. Svante Myrickamerican people.
