On the Rise of Hate Speech in Political Discourse

Shakespeare’s Richard III offers an interesting lens through which we can examine modern political dynamics. In a striking moment, Queen Elizabeth asks Queen Margaret how to curse her enemies, indicating that true hatred requires a detachment from reason. This stark lesson seems more relevant than ever today.

It appears that the left has embraced this lesson. Hate speech comes from prominent Democratic figures, and troublingly, as tensions rise, so does political violence. The strategy seems to revolve around inciting voters to despise their opponents to the point where they forget the animosities directed back at them.

The irony here is quite notable. Historically, liberals have sought to categorize more viewpoints as hate speech while attempting to label hate speech itself as outside the protections of the First Amendment. From senators to past presidential hopefuls, many have argued that not all speech is protected.

In my book, “An Essential Right: Freedom of Speech in a Time of Anger,” I reflect on the discomforting truth that many revel in their anger, enjoying the freedom it grants them to express hatred without facing consequences. Anger, it seems, can become quite addictive.

Those caught in this web struggle to forgive those who cling to decency. In heated times, being rational is often seen as outdated.

This week, Bravo star Jennifer Welch shared a video in which protesters rejoiced at the news of Charlie Kirk’s death. The clip featured an elderly woman expressing her satisfaction with Kirk’s demise, referring to him as a “terrible person.” Welch’s reaction was jubilant, showing a kind of pressure for others in her political circle to follow suit.

Contrast this with Jamie Lee Curtis, who faced backlash after sharing a more measured response to Kirk’s passing. Although she noted their differences, she hoped he found peace in his faith. Unfortunately, this compassion quickly led to a backlash from those who demanded a more extreme stance, prompting her to recant her earlier comments.

Globally, there’s a movement to criminalize opposing speech under the guise of protecting against hate. UNESCO defines hate speech as any derogatory language that targets individuals based on identity, essentially encompassing a wide array of expressions. Nations are even pressed to “ban” speech associated with conspiracy theories and misinformation.

Critically, past instances of criticism regarding politicians were once labeled as hate speech. Yet the landscape has shifted dramatically, with some on the left now seemingly reveling in unchecked hatred.

Recently, a Chicago teacher was filmed mimicking Kirk’s assassination, while another educator urged violence against agents of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In educational circles, discussions have turned overtly hostile, with faculty using incendiary language to establish their own integrity while attacking others.

Democratic strategist James Carville recently expressed a desire to treat Trump supporters as collaborators, a sentiment reflecting a disturbing trend within the party to harness rage against their opponents.

This climate has shifted how Democratic leaders engage with their own base, with increasingly divisive rhetoric labeling Republicans as “Nazis” while asserting that democracy itself is in jeopardy. A Virginia attorney general candidate went so far as to send texts expressing violent intentions towards political opponents, and still, he has not faced the condemnation one might expect.

Rather than ostracize such individuals, party members have rallied behind them, signaling a new acceptance of hostility that could shape future elections. Observers can only hope that this trend of embracing anger may not seep into broader discourse.

Like Queen Elizabeth, voters may feel they’ve shed any restraints and are now ready to impart lessons in disdain.
