The main offseason needs for NYCFC that need attention

New York City FC’s season came to a surprising end with a 5-1 defeat against Inter Miami on Saturday night.

This early conclusion to the 2025 season leaves several matters for the club to tackle before the 2026 campaign kicks off in just a few months.

While the team had a commendable postseason run and made notable strides throughout 2025, there are still aspects that require attention as they enter their second year under coach Pascal Jansen.

“I believe the season went well,” Tyvon Gray expressed after the match, as he prepared to board the team bus from Chase Stadium. “Sure, there were challenges, but overall, I think we managed. A lot of new changes have taken place, and we’re headed in the right direction.”

Nevertheless, for New York City FC to maintain this momentum, it’s crucial for the front office to address some pressing needs.

Appointment of new sports director

One of the key priorities will be finding a replacement for former athletic director David Lee, who left to become President of Soccer Operations and General Manager for Sporting Kansas City.

The club has operated without this role since then and has been quietly searching for a new sporting director.

NYCFC CEO Brad Sims mentioned that he has narrowed down prospective candidates and aims to announce someone before the winter period begins.

The incoming director will face important roster decisions and will need to identify the areas where the club requires improvement.

Filling the gap left by Alonso Martinez

Following Saturday’s loss, NYCFC felt the absence of goal-scorer Alonso Martinez and will need to find a way to boost their scoring prospects for 2026.

Martinez, with 17 goals in the regular season, led the team, while Hannes Wolff came in second with 11. However, with Martinez’s reported torn ACL sidelining him, the team faces a significant challenge next year.

Although the club hasn’t made an official statement, it’s expected that his injury will keep him out until mid-next season, making the recruitment of a suitable replacement essential for NYCFC’s future success.

Once a new sporting director is appointed, potential targets for recruitment should become clearer.

Re-signing of Justin Haak and player decisions

When Justin Haak spoke with reporters a few weeks back, it appeared that discussions for a new contract were progressing for the promising defender.

This past season, his defensive contributions have been significant, so retaining him should be a priority during the offseason.

Haak has emerged as one of the top defenders in MLS, and despite the disappointing playoff exit, his role in enhancing NYCFC’s defense can’t be overlooked.

However, he is among 12 players whose contracts are set to expire, and the team will need to make decisions regarding players like Tavon Gray, who has a team option for 2026, and captain Thiago Martins.

“I definitely want to stay,” Haak asserted. “My family enjoys it here. I love playing here and with my teammates. But you never know. Careers can change quickly. I’ll talk to the team about what they expect from me.”

When asked about what lies ahead, Gray simply said, “I’m not sure at this point.”
