Important Events
News of another former champion enjoying himself today. 2015 winner Jordan Spieth shot the 69-year-old's woundless round and shot birdies at 8, 9 and 13. And he almost chipped from behind 18. Overall, he is a very early clubhouse leader along with debutant Max Glazerman.
Zach Johnson continues his path around Augusta National, where the 2007 champions play their year at the start of the 21st Masters. He currently birdies 15 and 16, with 6 birdies on eight holes. He's -5 overall and appropriately in the mix. When he gets home, he will sign the week's joint top 65.
-8: Rose
-7: Decanter
-6: McIlroy, Conners
-5: Z Johnson (16), McCarty, Laurie, Scheffler, Hutton
-4: Lead (3), Morikawa (2), Yo (1), rhøjgaard, hovland
-3: Åberg (2), Matsuyama (2), im (1)
-2: Rahm (16), An (12), Harman (5), Schauffele (4), Fleetwood (4)
4 birdies for Byeong-Hun! Holes 8-11. With the exception of the first of them, the par 5, which is the easiest to play all week, it should be a very tricky hole run. Well, not for those who enjoy themselves around here, but his tie in 16th place will have the best finish at the master. He's -2 overall.
Tom Kim was the first man today. A strange number of players made the cut – 53-He was with markers Michael McDermott and Jeff Knox de nos joursenough Augusta National member to beat the US amateur and future pro JB Holmes in 2003. The relaxed atmosphere seems to have been paired with fun-loving Kim to tea. Because he carded the best round of the week, Level Par 72, and finished in one of the prosperities. Kim throws the putter into the sky, punches the air and embraces McDermott. Look for footage on the Masters website and don't laugh like runes. It's impossible not to love Tom Kim.
Very Smiley Bryson Deccanbeau chats with CBS Sports. “If I can hold it on the fairway… I'll take a green iron shot… I'll see a lot… I'll see what the players are doing… Where the pin location is… People are trying to play it… I'm trying to slow it down a bit… Let's start my day… I just feel like I'm getting up and playing golf and getting ready to have a good time… I'm looking forward to it…
12 o'clock shot by Denny McCarthy! On a par 3 for 155 yards, he lands the ball 5 feet in front of the flag. Some small bounces take it a few feet closer, but no more. But that's a kick-in-birdie. The 32-year-old from Florida had a modest tie with a top finish here in 45th last year, but will move to red at -1 overall. It is only close to the 12th fourth ace in Masters history. Others: Curtis Strange, two-time US Open champion in 1988, amateur bill handman in 1959, and Butch's father Claude Harmon in 1947 (one year before victory).
Tommy Fleetwood's round downbeat begins. He misunderstood the long putt from behind 1, and the ball finishes the pin high, but breaks 7 feet to the right. Attempts to save PAR are pulled straight to the left. Bogie knocks him back to -1. However, the next match is a fast start to one of the pre-tournament hot tips, but Colin Morakawa rocks his approach from a 150-yard pin height and strokes the stroke with 10 footers of birdies. He is -4.
Rory McIlroy speaks with CBS Sports. “That's the same way of thinking today… take care of what I'm doing… don't look around… don't look at the leaderboard… they're big, white, and quite inevitable!
Zach Johnson plays 13th place in textbook fashion on par 5. Drive in the middle. A layup wedge around the corner. Tip from 85 yards to a few feet. It's birdie and the more proof from him is that you don't need the length of the boom boom to succeed at Augusta National. Of course, it helps, the role of honor shows it. But it doesn't break a complete deal. He is now under 5 years old in his round and is -3 overall.
Some good scoring divisions. Some former champions are there and prove that low numbers are possible. Jon Rahm of Liv Golf and Buyer's Remorse Fame feels much longer than he had been a few years ago, so he jumped out of the block with three consecutive birdies this morning. He is currently a tournament flatland. The 2015 Champion Jordans Piece has now birded 8, 9 and 13 in the perfect round. He's -1 overall. 2007 winner Zach Johnson now has two birdies plus two on 9, 10 and 12, and one bogey wound in 6, he made a birdie with -2 overall.
It's a sunny day at Augusta National, but not a particularly warm day. The wind is expected to pick up a bit as the day goes on, but not as intense as yesterday afternoon. The outside chances of rain have also come later, but even if it arrives, it is not predicted to be too dramatic. Throws some attractive pin arrangements, and the conditions are ripe for some good scoring.
Dunlap's Valedictory round would have been even more impressive if he hadn't finished with three consecutive bogeys. But that wasn't the worst late round meltdown yesterday. What a disaster. It's not a long chalk. Runner-up Brooks Koepka, 2019 and 2023, was competing now if he could make a bogey at 18 last night. Sadly, for the fifth major winner, he pulled a tee shot into the tree on the left and was forced to do something that is not playable. After chopping, he shortened himself into the fourth green left marsh, and then shaved three times from there. Quadruple Layers – Bogie Eight. ooo-wee. Is he as bad as Cameron Young, and is he here today?
Before things get shattered, take this opportunity to tip the cap to young Nick Dunlap. The 21-year-old shot 90 on Thursday, and many players would respond by playing illness and injury cards to minimize embarrassment before quietly retreating. However, Dunlap removed his frustration with a bucket of rangeballs and went back yesterday to post 71 rounds. Of course, he still missed the cut in the final spot, but if he was handing out a green jacket for Moxie, Dunlap is definitely at the head of the line. His first two rounds differed in the second-largest Masters history, and the biggest Craigwood effort of 1936. Wood won the Masters five years later.
