Treasury Secretary Criticizes Governors Over Tax Cuts

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has called out several governors on social media. Senators Cathy Hochul (D-NY), Jared Polis (D-CO), and JB Pritzker (D-IL) were labeled the “Grinch that Stole Christmas” for their states’ unwillingness to implement President Trump’s Fourth of July tax cut legislation.

Bessent tweeted, “Thanks to @POTUS, it’s a merry season. Unless you’re a taxpayer in New York, Colorado, Illinois, or D.C.” He accompanied his message with an illustration depicting three left-leaning governors as villains from a Dr. Seuss story.

He further remarked, “To millions of hardworking Americans, @GovKathyHochul, @GovofCO, @jaredpolis, and @GovPritzker are like Grinchies who stole Christmas. Because of their Scrooge-like behavior, many older Americans will miss out on the tax breaks they deserve, along with workers who benefit from exempted tips and overtime taxes.”

Bessent emphasized, “The Christmas season is meant for cheer, but due to the so-called Trump Derangement Syndrome from these governors, too many low- and middle-income households are left with nothing but coal in their state tax bills.”

A recent press release from the U.S. Treasury accused “liberal strongholds” such as New York, Colorado, and Illinois of “intentionally blocking” crucial parts of Trump’s “Big and Beautiful Bill,” which was enacted on Independence Day.

“President Trump’s tax cut bill is one of the most beneficial for workers and families in a generation. We’re putting more money in the pockets of hardworking Americans through tax-free tips and overtime, along with new credits for seniors on Social Security,” the release stated. “Yet, states like Colorado, New York, Illinois, and D.C. are preventing their residents from accessing these significant benefits, showcasing blatant political sabotage. This obstruction impacts the very families and workers that liberal politicians claim to support, resulting in higher state taxes and increased financial strain for low- and moderate-income families.”

The Treasury Department urged Democratic states to stop blocking the implementation of the Trump tax cuts and “immediately adapt,” emphasizing that partisan gamesmanship should not hurt their citizens.

The announcement concluded with a statement about equity and opportunity, asserting that the country cannot allow obstructionism to hinder recovery efforts. “This is about putting America first, particularly for families and workers who drive our economy,” the release noted.
