MLS Cup Final Preview
As December 6th approaches, only four teams are in the running for the MLS Cup final. The match, taking place at a top seed venue, features the Philadelphia Union from the East and expansion team San Diego FC from the West, both aiming to seize the opportunity to be crowned champions.
Let’s dive into the contenders from the West, what to keep an eye on, and our thoughts on who might make it to the conference finals.
3rd Place Los Angeles Football Club vs. 2nd Place Vancouver FC
Saturday, November 22nd, 9:30 PM, Apple TV, MLS Season Pass
This matchup is highly anticipated. LAFC is recognized as one of the most exciting teams in the league, boasting a potent attack led by Denis Bouanga, an international from France and Gabon. The team’s energy has ramped up even more with the summer arrival of Son Heung-min. They seem to be on quite a roll at the moment.
On the flip side, Vancouver is guided by the experienced presence of German legend Thomas Muller and has a solid defense. Remarkably, they allowed just one goal in regulation during their impressive 2-0 sweep of FC Dallas, netting four goals across both fixtures. This season, Vancouver has been undefeated in their last 14 matches and last faced a loss back in August.
Prediction: Given the competitive nature of this match, it has all the makings of a nail-biter. Honestly, if it ends up going to penalties, Vancouver might just have that slight edge to secure a spot in the conference finals.
4th Place Minnesota United vs. 1st Place San Diego FC
Monday, November 24th, 10 PM, Apple TV, MLS Season Pass
Minnesota recently garnered a notable victory against Seattle, largely thanks to the skillful efforts of Dane St. Clair, the reigning MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. Their sturdy defense provided the support needed to keep the Sounders at bay through two games.
But then there’s San Diego, who are truly having a record-breaking season. If they advance to the conference finals, it would mark an incredible start for an expansion team. Their forward, Anders Dreyer, has been on fire with 19 goals and 19 assists. Plus, the potential return of Mexican international Hirving Chucky Lozano could elevate their chances even more.
Prediction: For San Diego, making it to the Western Conference Finals would be a dream scenario, not just for the team but really for the league as well. Minnesota will present a challenge, but it seems unlikely that they’ll pose much of a threat to the home team. A 2-0 win could see San Diego through to the finals.
