Understanding Anti-ICE Activism

It’s important to clarify that those opposing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are not merely “protesters.” Genuine protests involve organized displays of dissent, like marches, chants, or petitions, aimed at persuading the public or authorities. In contrast, these activists often escalate matters beyond dialogue. They don’t shy away from obstructing law enforcement or creating disturbances. It’s about causing fear, not simply expressing dissent.

When anti-ICE activists face detention or arrest, they often shout, “First Amendment,” as though those words alone justify their actions leading to that moment. The First Amendment protects free speech and peaceful assembly, but it doesn’t provide a free pass for threats, violence, vandalism, or intimidation.

It’s essential to recognize the gravity of the situation. Many of the gatherings today don’t merely voice opinions; they challenge law enforcement and disrupt businesses. There’s a growing sentiment among some activists that authority should be treated as an antagonist, leading to a sense of entitlement regarding aggressive behavior.

However, not every individual involved operates under the same motives. Yet, certain behavioral patterns emerge often enough that clinical observations can shed light on these actions. I’ve categorized these anti-ICE “rebels” into seven groups—not as formal diagnoses, but as patterns that reflect collective behavior in chaotic environments.

Trump Confusion Syndrome

Some members of these anti-ICE groups perceive ICE as an extension of former President Trump. This leads to an irrational, overly intense hostility towards anything linked to him, often extending to individuals just doing their jobs.

Celebrity Worship Syndrome

Others draw their motivation from celebrities and influencers, turning popular slogans into tangible actions. This can resemble a sort of obsessive behavior that propels fans from passive observation to active and sometimes extreme engagement, especially with cultural norms rewarding anger.

Mad Hatter

Certain participants show impulsive and defiant tendencies, which healthcare professionals might associate with disorders like oppositional defiant disorder. In its more extreme display, this behavior becomes destructive, evidencing aggression and a lack of respect for social norms.

Lost Soul

Some individuals simply drift into these crowds, seeking identity and belonging. In such instances, group dynamics serve as a substitute for personal meaning and stability.

Degenerate Mob

Adrenaline and excitement can lead some to revert to juvenile behavior, seeking confrontation and acting out on impulse, reminiscent of childish tantrums.

Couple’s Personality

This group often demonstrates paranoid or grandiose tendencies, with traits that can flourish in collective settings, where extreme behavior often receives group validation and diminishes individual accountability.

Drug Abuser

For some, substances lower inhibitions, increasing risk-taking behaviors, transforming protests into opportunities for revelry masked by a supposed moral cause.

These categories highlight how swiftly gatherings can spiral into chaotic and predatory behavior. Individuals mirror one another, feeding off shared fears and zeal, attacking as groups do.

While understanding these motivations can clarify the actions taken, they don’t absolve anyone from accountability. Those who engage in violence, block enforcement actions, or threaten others must face the consequences dictated by law. After all, while speech is safeguarded, violence is not.

ICE officials enforce federal laws while facing hostility and risk. A society that equates mob intimidation with legitimate protest undermines the rule of law, jeopardizing everyone.
