The most amusing joke Jimmy Kimmel never shared

This week, the Democrats showed a rare bit of anger. It wasn’t sparked by Charlie Kirk’s murder, but rather by the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show.

Democratic leaders are using their platforms to criticize the decision, claiming it stems from Kimmel spreading misinformation regarding the Kirk case.

It’s interesting, really. The very same leaders and experts have, for years, advocated for censorship under various pretexts. Just months ago, a Democrat was influencing Fox News, the leading cable network, to push for similar broadcasting in the name of fighting online disinformation. This was during a time when Democrats held the White House and were vocal about targeting conservatives.

Now, on the flip side, disinformation suddenly seems to be more than just a reason for censorship—it’s viewed as a potential threat to free speech, particularly in light of recent allegations regarding some government-business collaborations.

Following the tragic event in Utah, many on the left attempted to divert attention by suggesting Kirk’s assailant was a Trump supporter. Kimmel even stated that the “Maga Gang” was working hard to label the child who killed Kirk as anything other than part of their group, intending to gain some political leverage.

Tyler Robinson, the suspect, had actually been on the radar already. His family mentioned he had been influenced by left-leaning ideologies, including pro-transgender views. This wasn’t a mere joke; Kimmel made a serious claim broadcasted nationwide, joining others in spreading misinformation.

Despite the unfolding narrative, false claims continued to circulate. For example, a Harvard professor absurdly claimed Kirk’s alleged killer was a result of exaggerated GOP efforts to pin blame for the situation on liberals. Interestingly enough, this professor had previously linked unrelated events to political distractions.

False information has become a pervasive issue online. Polling data indicates that many Americans believe Robinson aligns more closely with conservative beliefs than progressive ones.

Some are calling it a refusal to acknowledge facts. Keith Olbermann, a former host at MSNBC and ESPN, expressed his outrage after Kimmel’s suspension, declaring thoughts about Kirk that were untrue.

It’s a bit ironic. Critics have often complained about censorship for those spreading misinformation. Yet now, some argue that democracy itself could be at stake if Kimmel’s voice is suppressed. Interestingly, it seems Kimmel is resisting an apology and intends to double down on his commentary against conservatives when he returns. Faced with backlash from affiliates and potential advertiser exits, Disney’s Bob Iger ultimately decided to cut Kimmel’s show, which had already been experiencing declining ratings compared to other late-night hosts.

The hypocrisy is almost comical. For years, many of these voices have called for the silencing of individuals they deem to be pushing harmful narratives, branding their statements as misleading or malicious. This last descriptor was notably used by the Biden administration to target remarks that, while factually based, were interpreted as being harmful or contextually misleading.

Meanwhile, critics like Senator Elizabeth Warren have previously proposed tough penalties for those who spread disinformation, only to now argue that Kimmel’s situation signifies a troubling form of censorship. Warren even mentioned government interference in the media, stating that this kind of collaboration undermines the whole premise of their original arguments.

Senator Adam Schiff described the suspension as one of the most blatant attacks on free speech in American history. He had previously sought similar actions against Twitter, insisting they restrict certain accounts. When Elon Musk began reducing censorship on X, Schiff issued warnings about the repercussions for Facebook if they were to reverse some of their policies on misinformation.

Now he’s notably upset with the suspension of a host who wouldn’t adjust the misleading narrative they had pushed.

It’s fascinating how this all comes full circle. These congressional leaders have long defended corporate censorship while denying any perception of collaboration with the government. While Kimmel’s show was profitable, no one moved to drop him. Yet, it raises the question of how much freedom of speech a business can allow when its employees spread dubious claims. Kimmel might believe his views shouldn’t be censored, but ABC also shouldn’t have to risk losing viewers over such controversies.

In the current climate, Disney has been accused of suppressing democracy itself in collusion with Trump. Senator Chris Murphy lashed out, claiming Trump is trying to destroy democracy, while Rep. Maxwell Frost pointed at Kimmel’s suspension as evidence of looming fascism.

Interestingly, Minnesota’s Governor Tim Waltz likened the decision to North Korean tactics, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer noted that this sort of action is reminiscent of Putin’s regime. It’s a curious comparison, considering both figures promote narratives favorable to them while stifling dissent.

Rep. Jamie Raskin went so far as to compare Kimmel to the revolutionary figure Thomas Paine, suggesting that Kimmel’s spread of misinformation somehow makes him a champion for democracy.

So, according to this narrative, Kimmel emerges as a hero of sorts, merely for disseminating falsehoods. This ironic twist really could be the most amusing joke Kimmel never delivered.
